Russian UN ambassador Churkin speaks

Yanukovich asks Russia to prevent unstable Ukraine 'from further deteriorating'


Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin revealed at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday a March 1 letter from Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich to Russian President Vladimir Putin that asked for armed forces assistance in maintaining law and order in Ukraine. "The person who we believe legally is the president of Ukraine...shares our concerns, shares the concerns of large segments of the Ukrainian population about what is going on and is appealing to Russia to use our armed forces...to prevent the situation from further deteriorating
