Aftershock in Solomons

Strong aftershock in Solomon Islands
The US Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has struck more than 400km east of the Solomon Islands.

8 February, 2013

It is the latest and one of the biggest aftershocks since Wednesday's fatal magnitude 8.0 tremor and tsunami which hit the remote Temotu Province.
The quake, reported on Thursday by USGS, was 10km deep and located southeast of Kira Kira. There was no immediate tsunami warning issued.

Meanwhile, people in the area most damaged by the 8.0 quake and tsunami will finally get help on Friday.

Nine people were killed when the quake set off a metre-high wave surge that swept half a kilometre inland on the main island of the Santa Cruz group.

A chartered plane is due to fly the Solomons Prime Minister, two doctors and supplies to Lata in Temotu Province on Friday morning.

Journalist Dorothy Wickham, based in the capital Honiara, told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme the group will be confronted by scenes of devastation, as villagers' flimsy houses have been obliterated.

"They're mostly made of thatched leaf and local timber, so the damage would be total if there was a wave that went through - there wouldn't be anything left standing. It would be the same as what happened in Gizo in western province back in 2007.

"I think the most effects the community would be feeling now would be the lack of food, water and good shelter."

Ms Wickham said a patrol boat with food and medical supplies is due to arrive in Santa Cruz in the evening.

Scientists discover why Japan quake so big

8 February, 2013

Scientists drilling into the fault responsible for the powerful earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011 have discovered why the quake was so much bigger than expected.

The disaster claimed at least 12,000 lives, destroyed 85,000 homes and triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant in northeast Japan.
A geologist at the Otago University in New Zealand involved in the study says it was previously thought that earthquakes release about 10% of stress built up when tectonic plates slide under each other.

However, Virginia Toy says they have discovered that the Japan quake released almost all the stress in one go, creating a tsunami so big that it topped protective sea walls.

Dr Toy says the findings mean disaster planners and authorities need to be prepared for much bigger quakes and tsunamis than previously thought.
The research has been published in the journal Science.
