Since
the meltdowns at Fukushima in March, 2011 there has been a deafening
silence, both from government and media. New Zealanders have been
totally kept in the dark about the dangers to health of ionising
radiation from the disaster. Even as the mass media starts to
selectively reveal the truth of what is happening in Japan an almost
total silence continues in this country.
Almost
the sole exception to this silence have been a couple of programmes
made by Wayne Brittenden on the Sunday programme on Radio New
Zealand.
The
New Zealand government is showing a criminal neglect by keeping
silent on Fukushima and indeed refusing to supply answers about this
in questions to parliament.
According
to Wayne Brittenden the New Zealand fishing industry is REFUSING to
test fish for radiation.
Individual
New Zealanders are making real efforts to bring this to the attention
of New Zealanders, but with the silence of both government and media,
with limited success.
I
urge you to share this information with everyone you know.
It
is essential that New Zealanders be informed about what they are
facing

The
Health effects of radiation from Fukushima on New Zealand children
Submission
to Health Select Committee Inquiry into How to Prevent Child Abuse
and Improve Health Outcomes for 0- 3 Year Old Children
Prepared
on behalf The New Zealand Journal of Natural Medicine by Jonathan
Eisen and Katherine ehalf The New Zealand Journal of Natural Medicine
by Jonathan Eisen and Katherine Smith, editors
1)
To update knowledge of what factors influence best childhood outcomes
from before conception to 3 years, and what are significant barriers.
2)
What practical improvements can be made to health, education, social
and other services, targeted at the preconceptional period that will
improve infant and child outcomes (including the maintenance of a
healthy body weight).
3)
What practical improvements can be made to antenatal maternity
services so that children ‘at risk’ of
adverse health outcomes are identified early, monitored
appropriately, and followed through to achieve best outcomes.
4)
What practical improvements can be made to post-natal services
(including the interface between lead maternity caregiver, Plunket
and primary care) to ensure best outcomes for children.
5)
What, if any improvements can be made to the ‘well child’
services (especially hard to reach children).
What
practical improvements or interventions can be made to achieve
optimal outcomes for children from the 6 week post-natal periods to 3
years of life, with particular reference to health services but not
excluding education, social, housing, justice and other determinants
of health?
This
document will respond to the first question posed by this Inquiry.
(The other questions will be addressed in a follow up submission.)
1)
To update knowledge of what factors influence best childhood outcomes
from before conception to 3 years, and what are significant barriers.
The
disaster at the nuclear power plants in Fukushima has been estimated
to have released more radiation than the accident at Chernobyl in the
1980s, and unlike Chernobyl, which was entombed in concrete to stop
ongoing radiation releases, the ruined power stations at Fukushima
are still leaking.
The
Northern Pacific has been contaminated, and considerable amounts of
radionucleotides have been carried on the winds across to North
America. This has resulted in an increase in the general death rate
as well as a significant increase in infant mortality in North
America
Study:
Fukushima killed at least 14,000 people in the US, mostly babies, in
weeks following disaster
Any
strategy that the government may adopt with the aim of giving
children the best start in life by optimising their care beginning
from the preconceptual period, until they are three years old, needs
to take account of the fact that we are now all living in an
environment that exposes us to considerably more ionising radiation
than we were even 18 months ago.
The
full facts of the magnitude of the disaster at Fukushima have not
been reported in mainstream media in NZ. This is a significant
barrier to helping the NZ population reduce the health risks
associated with increased exposure to ionising radiation. People will
not take steps to protect themselves from a hazard like ionising
radiation if they do not know that they are exposed.
Ionising
radiation may be considered an "invisible" pollutant, as it
cannot be seen, heard, discerned by touch etc without specialist
equipment such as a geiger counter.
The
silence from the NZ government on this issue, and the lack of testing
by the NZ National Radiation Laboratory of consumer goods being
imported from contaminated areas of Japan means that people's health
is being put unnecessarily at risk.
Especially
the health of our children, who are more susceptible to the effects
of ionizing radiation than adults.
NZ
urgently needs to start testing all products coming from Japan and
turning away those products that are contaminated.
Moreover,
as there have been reports of radiation spikes that suggest that NZ
may also have been hit by some of the fallout from Fukushima
It
is vital that the New Zealand public be informed about the radiation
issue and how to take steps to protect their family's health. :
It
is particularly important for young people who have not yet had
children to be informed about this issue since taking steps to
minimise their exposure to ionising radiation and reduce its impact
on their health may make the difference between their being able to
conceive healthy children or suffer pregnancy losses or have children
with health problems in the years to come.
In
brief, foods that contain high levels of antioxidants (such as green
leafy vegetables such as kale, and carrots provide a measure of
protection from ionising radiation since part of the damage from
exposure to radiation is that the damage that is done to cells in the
body can start a free radical cascade which injures even more cells
than were originally "hit" by the radioactive particles.
Antioxidant nutritional supplements such as vitamin C and E can be
helpful in mitigating the effects of radiation, however herbs and
supplements that contain complex molecules such as the polyphenols
found in green tea and grape seed extract are more effective than low
doses of single nutrients.
It
is also possible to use nutritional supplements to reduce the body's
uptake of radioactive elements. (For example, it is standard medical
practice to give a large dose of iodine to people who have been
exposed – or will shortly be exposed – to high levels of
radioactive iodine from, for example, a nuclear power plant disaster.
The large dose of iodine saturates the thyroid gland and prevents
this gland from taking up radioactive iodine which could otherwise
accumulate in the thyroid and cause cancer.) Similarly, radioactive
strontium has an affinity for the bones and may be taken up into the
bones at a higher level by people who are deficient in calcium and
magnesium.
In
a supplementary submission we will discuss some of the scientific
evidence for using antioxidants to reduce the adverse health effects
of ionising radiation as well as practical measures that people can
take to help reduce absorbtion of radioactive elements and reduce
existing body burdens of radioactive compounds (such as chelation
therapies.)
We
will also address how these measures may be integrated into a
preconceptual care programme and discuss which of these measures
should be considered for integration into the care of pregnant women.
This is the report on radiation levels in New Zealand sited above. Measurements are being taken on a regular basis from Christchurch.

I have been in contact with a person In New Zealand who just sent me information of a detection of a high level radiation cloud passing over Dunedin New Zealand. You will find a copy of his email correspondence below. This chart is the recorded background radiation level during this event. Visual observation saw peaks reach an incredible 1.89 uS/Hr ! [...]
