Emergency Action”: Lawmaker says nuclear waste is under threat from underground landfill fire near St. Louis

17 June, 2013
Work continues to put out the fire at the burning Bridgeton landfill, while new information is expected to be released Monday about the nearby nuclear waste sit.
State Representative Bill Otto of St. Charles has schedule a new conference around 3:30 p.m. at Pattonville High School to brief residents about “new concerns” regarding the landfill. Otto will unveil new information about the radioactive waste dumped at the nearby West Lake Landfill in the 1970s.
The underground fire at the Bridgeton Sanitary Landfill has been smoldering for two-and-a-half years and is slowly creeping toward the nuclear site.
Workers have made progress cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire.
The fire was said to be about 1,000 feet from the nuclear site and a court-approved plan to put out the fire was said to be “making progress.”
