60 Degree (F) Temperatures Observed Over Arctic Waters on August 13, 2018

Robert Fanney

Preliminary GFS model analysis indicates that over ocean temperatures in the Laptev Sea hit 16 C or 60 degrees F today. These readings are about 15 C above average for this time of year. As we wouldn't typically see such large departures over ocean surfaces during summer, this high temperature for the Arctic Ocean is notable. The above analysis also provides an overview of potential and observed impacts to local sea ice.
