El-Nino
in New Zealand
From having a record warm winter the part of New Zealand I live in has gone to a cool spring with lots of gales that have dried out the soil making it look like a drought. However, the weather is constantly overcast and cooler than usual.
While we would normally see hot drought conditions during an el-Nino everything now is an aberration
This
report is from Pam Crisp:
"We’ve
been looking forward to our traditional Christmas lamb. Alas, not
this year. We received an email last week from Wai Ora Meats, a
Manawatu-based family farm supplying the Wellington region, advising
us that, due to the colder than normal temperatures, pasture growth
had been too slow for the lambs to reach the weight needed to
process them."
This
is borne out by this report from Radio New Zealand “Country Life”
which is about the only place in the NZ media you will find anything
about weather conditions.
We can see why New Zealand might be cooler than other places on the globe if you look at these two charts.
While the Pacific, as a whole is on fire the ocean surrounding New Zealand is cooler than the average
BTW - Have a quick look at temperature aberrations in Bering Strait, between Alaska and Russia!
This
map shows that land temperatures in New Zealand are below average
To
those who belly-ache about the conditions I would caution to be
careful what they wish for and be a bit more aware of what their
cousins in Australia are facing and extreme weather everywhere around the globe.
