A
strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific nation of
Tonga US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.
The
under-sea quake hit at 08:46 am (2046 GMT Saturday), 139 kilometres
(86 miles) from the town of Neiafu, on the south coast of the island
Vava'u, at a depth of 205 kilometres, the US Geological Survey (USGS)
said.
The
Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said based on the depth of the quake,
no tsunami was expected.
The
epicentre of the tremor was 353 kilometres north of the capital
Nuku'alofa.
Tonga,
almost 2,000 kilometres northeast of New Zealand, lies on the
so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where continental plates
collide causing frequent seismic activity.
Strong
quake rattles Iran
A
strong earthquake of 6.2 hit southern Iran early Saturday, the US
Geological Survey said, with local media reporting of damaged
villages and several injuries.

The
epicentre of the quake was measured at 85km southeast of the southern
town of Minab at 0208 GMT, the USGS said in a statement. It was at a
depth of 36.44km.
Head
of Iran's Red Crescent rescue corps Mahmoud Mozafar told the Fars
news agency that at least 11 people had been injured in five villages
which were "severely" hit by the quake.
The
Mehr news agency, quoted him as saying that "several houses were
levelled" based on preliminary reports.
The
reports said rescue teams were dispatched to the affected area.
The
USGS said there was a 35 per cent chance of fatalities from the quake
which the Hong Kong Observatory measured at 6.1.
Iran's
Seismological Centre has registered a series of aftershocks,
measuring between 4.1 and 5.2.
Iran
sits astride several major fault lines and is prone to frequent
earthquakes, some of which have been devastating.
