THERESA
May won last night's vote of confidence in her leadership of the
Conservative Party, paving the way for desperate attempts to rescue
her Brexit deal as Prime Minister.
The
Prime Minister won by a margin of 200 to 117 - securing the 159 votes
needed to survive the crunch ballot. Just hours before the crucial
vote, she had been on course to achieve a narrow victory, with 177
Tory MPs publicly backing her. But there had been fears that several
MPs were bluffing and would instead vote against Theresa May in a bid
to oust her.
The
Prime Minister promised them she will step down at the end of Brexit
negotiations and not contest the next general election in a
last-ditch attempt to win approval for the confidence vote.
Solicitor
general Robert Buckland told reporters after the meeting: "She
said 'In my heart I would like to lead the party into the next
election' and then that was the introductory phrase to her indication
that she would accept the fact that that would not happen, that is
not her intention."....
