Typhoon Talim to Strengthen Into a Strong Typhoon and Possibly Threaten Taiwan, China and Japan
11
September, 2017
Talim, now
a typhoon, is forecast to strengthen and may threaten parts
of southern Japan and China later this week.
(MORE: Hurricane
Central)
Talim
will move in a general west-northwest direction the next few days on
the southern periphery of an upper-level high-pressure system that is
located to its north.
Atmospheric
conditions favor that Talim will gain strength in the days ahead, and
it has the potential to rapidly intensify into a strong typhoon while
closing in on Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands.
Current
Information and Projected Path
Talim
could be equivalent in strength to a major hurricane (Category
3 or stronger)
when it moves near Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands Wednesday
into Thursday, local time.
Destructive
winds, pounding surf and flooding rainfall are all potential
threats in the southern Ryukyu Islands. The severity of those
impacts will be dependent on the exact track of Talim in
relation to those land areas, along with its strength at that time.
Rainfall Outlook
If
Talim moves closer to Taiwan, it would be the second typhoon
to affect Taiwan this year. Typhoon Nesat made
landfall in northern Taiwan during late July.
