Russian
Tu-160 strategic bombers land in Venezuela after 10,000km
transatlantic flight (VIDEO)

Venezuela
has welcomed the arrival of Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers as an
opportunity to demonstrate its resolve to defend the nation against
possible foreign military intervention, with the help of “friends”
if need be.
Two
Tu-160 strategic bombers made a gracious landing at Sim贸n Bol铆var
International Airport on Monday where they were greeted by the honor
guard of the Venezuelan air force. Wearing orange pilot suits and
combat helmets, Russian servicemen descended onto the runway where
they were eager to present their colleagues with a scaled model of
the 'White Swan' bomber, which they had just flown over 10,000
kilometers to reach the Caribbean shores in order to take part
in “combined operational flights” with the
Venezuelan Air Force.
We are getting prepared to defend Venezuela when it is needed.
“And
we will do it with our friends who advocate respect-based relations
between states,” Defense
Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said after the two bombers, together
with An-124 transport and an Il-62 plane, landed in Venezuela.
While
the Russian delegation painted their arrival to be a rare friendly
visit, the Venezuelan Defence Ministry noted that 'Russia-Venezuela
2018' operational flights will represent a “demonstration of
strength.” The training, Caracas maintains, will foster
military-technical cooperation and facilitate the exchange of
practical experience between the two militaries.
The
Tu-160, nicknamed the ‘White Swan’ in Russia and designated as
‘Blackjack’ by NATO, is the largest supersonic combat aircraft in
the world. The long-range aircraft, capable of carrying nuclear and
conventional missiles, can cover a distance of more than 12,000
kilometers without refueling. The Russian Air Force conducted similar
non-stop flights to Venezuela in 2008 and 2013.
The
flight to Venezuela over the Atlantic Ocean, the Barents, Norwegian
and Caribbean Seas did not go unnoticed, as Norwegian F-16 fighter
jets shadowed the Russian planes during part of their flight, even
though according to the Russian Defense Ministry the flight was
conducted “in strict accordance with the international regulations
on the use of airspace.”The bombers’ deployment to the Latin
American nation follows Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s visit
to Moscow last week.

Two
Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers, an AN-124 heavy-lift military
transport aircraft, and an IL-62 plane have carried out a flight from
Russia to Venezuela, landing at the Simon Bolivar International
Airport in capital Caracas, the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.
Russian
Tu-160 strategic bombers were shadowed by F-16 fighter jets of the
Norwegian Air Force at certain stages of their flight to Venezuela,
the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.
"At
certain stages of the flight, the Tu-160 bombers were followed by
F-16 fighter aircraft of the Norwegian Air Force while the flight was
carried out in strict accordance with the international rules on the
use of airspace," the ministry's press service said in a
statement.
According
to the ministry, the flight was conducted over the Atlantic Ocean,
the Barents Sea, the Sea of Norway and the Caribbean Sea. The planes
have flown a distance of over 10,000 kilometers (about 6,213 miles).
"The
flight was carried out in strict accordance with the international
regulations on the use of airspace," the ministry said in a
statement.

The
pre-positioning of Russian Tu-160 Bombers in northern South America
is a VERY troubling development. Those aircraft are long-range,
nuclear-capable aircraft which can easily reach ALL of the
continental United States from Venezuela.
It
is not yet known what future purpose these aircraft may have, but
this development is not good.
Maduro
warns of US plot to overthrow Venezuela government

Venezuela
President Nicolas Maduro warned of a US plot to overthrow the
country’s progressive government after his party swept to a
decisive victory in yesterday’s municipal elections.
The
United Socialist Party of Venezuela won 142 of the 156 declared
municipalities in what was Venezuela’s fifth election in just 18
months, said National Electoral Council chair Tibisay Lucena after
early results came in.
Critics
pointed to a low turnout, with an abstention rate of just over 70 per
cent of the 20.7 million eligible voters.
However,
Mr Maduro warned of US attempts to undermine his government, which
Washington is preparing to add to a list of countries that sponsor
and support terrorism.
Peru’s
right-wing government has said it will ask the 12 members of the
pro-Washington Lima Group, which includes several Latin American and
Caribbean states along with Canada, to break off relations with
Venezuela from January 10, when Mr Maduro begins his second term of
office.
The
four largest US-backed right-wing opposition groups did not
participate in Sunday’s poll, having refused to complete the
required papers to register for the elections.
They
also abstained from May’s presidential elections, claiming that the
National Electoral Council was not to be trusted and that there was a
lack of equality for political participation.
Casting
his vote in Caracas, Mr Maduro urged citizens to use their vote and
ensure they continue to live in a democracy, highlighting the nine
elections that have taken place under his presidency.
Speaking
in an address broadcast on state television, Mr Maduro said: “An
attempt is under way today, coming straight from the White House, to
destroy our way of life in Venezuela and to overthrow our
constitutional democracy.”
He
insisted: “Despite the conspiracies that come from the White House
to divide our country, we have a strong democracy.”
Venezuela’s
Bolivarian revolution has come under sustained pressure from the US,
whose President Donald Trump was reportedly considering a military
intervention earlier this year.
Mr
Maduro believes Washington was behind an assassination attempt that
involved a drone opening fire on him during a military parade in
August.
He
is due to start his second six-year term as president next month
after achieving a comfortable victory in May’s election.
And
then there is this.
