The
Russian Embassy has called on the United States to stop defending its
“protégés” in the Azov Sea. During an interview, the deputy
chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, Yury Shvytkin, shared
his views on the matter.
The
Russian embassy’s request in Washington has been directed to the US
to stop defending “its proteges in the Azov Sea,” the statement
said.
US
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert previously announced that
“the US condemns Russia’s harassment of international shipping in
the Azov Sea and the Kerch Strait.” She also pointed out that
“Moscow has stopped hundreds of merchant ships since April and
prevented at least 16 vessels from reaching Ukrainian ports.”
The
US State Department believes that in addition to violating
international standards, this hampers maritime traffic and represents
additional examples of a campaign to undermine and destabilize the
situation in Ukraine.
Russian
diplomats have criticized Washington for turning a blind eye to
Ukrainian “piracy” in that sea, where its coast guard has
detained the Russian vessel Nord and has been detained since August
12 by the tanker Mekhanik Pogodin with crew on board.
During
a radio interview , Shvytkin commented on the situation by saying
that “the United States should stop being the world policeman and
promote Ukrainians who violate international law and destabilize the
situation.”
“The
US says they are interested in securing stability, but at the same
time, their actions suggest the opposite. They encourage the
destabilizing actions of the Ukrainian authorities, who came to power
after the coup, and this is unacceptable. US authorities need to stop
such actions and take a constructive stand,” he continued.
Shvytkin
complements by stressing that Russia does not remain unanswered, as
it is now a powerful state with powerful Armed Forces as well as a
patriotic people.
“I
hope the US reacts positively, although there are serious doubts in
this part, but we cannot stay on the sidelines of these illegal
actions by the Ukrainian authorities that encourage the United
States.
Kiev
claims that Moscow creates obstacles to navigation in the waters of
Azov, and that more than 150 Ukrainian ships were detained through
naval blockades. Already the Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine,
Elena Zerkal, stated that the Russian border guards, during
inspection of the Ukrainian ships, did not violate the protocols in
the Sea of Azov.
While
the Crimean Border Guard observes that the inspection of foreign
ships is carried out in full compliance with international maritime
law.
