Food shortages and soaring costs are the high price of Italy's lorry drivers' strike. The truckers' protest against the government's reform and austerity drive is beginning to take a heavy toll on everyday life.
No deliveries means no food on the shelves in some places. One wholesale businessman said among the knock-on effects was a price rise of 50 - 100 percent for some items, where they are available. A surge in fuel costs triggered the strike, now it has driven prices at the pump even higher.
