4.4 earthquake very near the North Pole
Another Arctic Earthquake - very near the North Pole - M 4.4 - North of Svalbard
“A
strong abrupt rise in temperature could be caused by an influx of
warm salty water into the Arctic Ocean triggering large eruptions of
methane from its seafloor, as discussed in earlier posts such as this
one.”
"Methane
is present in sediments under the Arctic Ocean in the form of free
gas and hydrates. Earthquakes can send out strong tremors through the
sediment and shockwaves through the water, which can trigger further
earthquakes, landslides and destabilization of methane hydrates"
