Stormy Daniels, the woman who says she had an affair with US President Donald Trump, has been arrested at an Ohio strip club for letting patrons touch her in violation of state law.

Her lawyer Michael Avenatti said on Thursday (Friday, NZ time) Daniels was taken into custody during a show in Columbus, Ohio.

Avenatti said during the performance, some patrons touched her in a "non-sexual" way.

An Ohio law prohibits anyone who isn't a family member to touch a nude or semi-nude dancer.

Avenatti called the arrest a "complete set up". He said she was arrested inside the club.

A Columbus police spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

A person who answered the phone at Sirens, the strip club where Daniels performed, declined to comment.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has said she had sex with President Donald Trump in 2006 when he was married, which Trump has denied. She's suing Trump and his former longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and seeking to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement that she signed days before the 2016 presidential election.

In February, Cohen, the longtime personal lawyer for Trump admitted he paid US$130,000 (NZ$177,500) to the adult-film star, after previously dismissing stories about the payment.

His comments came after a watchdog group argued that the payout should be viewed as an unreported campaign expense, which Cohen denied.

In March it was announced Daniels would sue Trump, arguing that her hush-money arrangement to not talk about an alleged affair with him was null and void because Trump never signed it.

While Cohen's carefully worded statement said the Trump Organization and campaign weren't involved in the payout, it conspicuously did not rule out Trump's involvement. Then, the Wall Street Journal reported that Cohen had complained in the past about not being able to reach Trump during the process and not being reimbursed - both suggesting that Trump was indeed involved.
