National Front victory in French elections

No shock. Predictable. A very clever political strategy. The whole FN campaign was based on alterophobia - the fear of the Other. Unemployment, insecurity, terrorism: it's always The Other's fault. Vast swathers of fearful France bought it - there was nothing else in the market.

Now, their mantra is nationalism. "We are the true nationalists." It will also work. No wonder both left and right are dazed and confused - ramming the same old mantra of "Republican values". Values that they are not able to respect - plagued as they are by everything from neoliberalcon obsession to corruption.
