Grief on the edge of extinction

Grief in the face of abrupt climate change

There are hardworking and well-meaning scientists and journalists working at the coalface who despite their public face are feeling considerable grief and anxiety around the rate that things are changing in the Arctic and with the global climate as a whole.


One of these, who I have some admiration for is Eric Holthaus who writes and tweets about these matters.



Reading this, I feel physically sick. I feel so anxious. I'm not sure how many more years or months I'm going to be able to work daily on climate change. Today is one of those days.

Puerto Rico, Day 83: —Millions of people still w/o power —Hundreds of thousands still w/o clean water —Still a humanitarian emergency Lots of distractions. Let's not lose sight of the big picture.

Y’all’s President is on Twitter sexually harassing a female Senator while thousands in Puerto Rico still have no power, millions of kids are without health insurance and wildfires are engulfing the state of California.

Nearly halfway through December and still unusually warm coast-to-coast. Next 10 days look like more of the same.

A contrast for me is Michael E.Mann.

I have encountered others like him. Instead of admitting grief he denies the science – soem of which he produced.

In this video (of which I managed the first half) there is NO discussion of the science or citation of the literature to justify his hopeful conclusions.

I cannot stand people like this (and he is far from the only one) who uses his authority to talk DOWN to the great unwashed, some of whom know a great deal.

Instead they refuse to talk about the actual science and the truth of the matter and lecture people telling them that by so doing that they are inviting people to be passive in a simlar way to climate change deniers.


So long as there are liars like Michael E.Mann there will be deniers who will feel justified in their views by this man.
