stations across Catalonia have opened their doors. Voters are to cast
their ballots on whether the region should remain a part of Spain or
secede. Madrid is poised to thwart the vote, which it considers
illegal.

Several
hundred pro-regional independence activists have marched through the
streets of Nantes, calling for reunification with the Brittany region
of France and greater autonomy from the central government in Paris.
While
the city of Nantes is officially part of the Pays de la Loire region,
the district is historically and culturally tied to Brittany, one of
18 French regions.
Tear
gas fired as anti-G7 protesters clash with police in Turin, Italy
Hundreds
of activists have descended on the northern Italian city of Turin to
protest against the G7 ministerial meetings which have been held in a
cordoned-off area. Police have deployed tear gas to prevent
demonstrators from entering the closed area, Italian media reports.
