An array of US and EU sanctions on the Russian economy could be poised to be lifted in the near future, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Adel Al-Jubeir, told Russian state TV, adding that his country’s close ties with Washington do not present an obstacle for cooperation with Moscow.

We hope that an arrangement can be worked out where Russia and the international community can work out their differences so that the sanctions can be removed. And I expect that this will be soon,” Al-Jubeir said in an interview to Rossyia-24 television aired Friday, in response to a question about whether the anti-Russia sanctions would hamper investment projects.

The foreign minister went on to note that Saudi Arabia sees Russia as a “friendly country” and is seeking greater cooperation in energy and other areas. He also praised Russia’s role in the Middle East and said that it could contribute to the resolution of a number of regional conflicts.

We believe that a strong Saudi-Russian relationship can help to solve many of the challenges in the region,” Al-Jubeir said, adding that Riyadh believes “that Russia’s role in the Middle East is a positive one.”

He went on to say that Russia can particularly play a significant role in the peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and help achieve the “two-state solution.”

We both want to see a peaceful resolution of a conflict in Syria, based on Geneva declarations and the UN Security Council resolutions,” he added.

Al-Jubeir said also said that cooperation between Moscow and Riyadh in no way contradicts Riyadh’s partnership with Washington, as both Russia and US play a vital role in resolving conflicts that plague the Middle East.

Our relationship with the US is a strategic partnership, as you correctly pointed out, [but] we do not believe that improving our relationship with Russia is going to affect negatively our relations with the US. We want to have good ties with everybody,” he said.

The first-ever visit of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to Russia, which is to wrap up Sunday, has seen billions of dollars’ worth of deals being sealed on its sidelines, including the establishment of a $1 billion joint energy investment fund.

Among the various deals was a preliminary agreement for Saudi Arabia to purchase Russia’s most advanced S-400 missile defense systems, which would see the transfer of cutting-edge technologies to the oil-rich kingdom. It was estimated that the contract may be worth $3 billion.

Moscow and Riyadh also clinched a deal enabling a Saudi Arabian arms manufacturer to start production of the AK-103 Kalashnikov rifle.

King's Visit Shows Moscow, Riyadh 'Ready to Open New Era' in Bilateral Ties

Russia and Saudi Arabia are willing to overcome existing obstacles and open a new page in their relations, Dr. Hassan Nafaa, professor of political science at Cairo University, told Radio Sputnik commenting on the "landmark" first ever visit of Saudi King Salman to Moscow.

Saudi King Salman's visit to Russia "is a historical one" as it shows that "the two parties are ready to open a new era," Hassan Nafaa said.

According to the expert, the Russia-Saudi meeting has a "symbolic" meaning, which demonstrates that Riyadh "is ready for the development of Russia-Saudi relations that for a long time were generally inclined to be hostile."

Moreover, the talks between the leaders of the two countries could contribute to the settlement of the Middle Eastern crisis, the expert argued. Russia and Saudi Arabia are both important players in the ongoing conflict, and thus their diplomatic efforts could ease tensions in the region and create a basis for the resolution of other crises in the Middle East, like those in Yemen and Iraq.

Commenting on a possible US reaction to a potential Saudi-Russia military deal, Nafaa said that the agreement is unlikely to lead to a significant deterioration in Washington-Riyadh ties.

"I think the arms deal with Saudi Arabia could be very important because this will open new strategic opportunities in the relations between Saudi Arabia and Russia. The United States will not be very happy with this, but I think that Saudi Arabia might now diversify its relations with external, foreign powers and will not depend so heavily on the United States," the analyst concluded.

During their talks, King Salman and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a wide range of issues, including the Syrian conflict, the situation in the Middle East and the fight against terrorism. The visit has also resulted in a package of deals between Riyadh and Moscow. These include agreements on military and technical cooperation, as well as the energy and investment fields.

The meeting marks the first ever trip of the reigning Saudi monarch to Russia and is viewed as a landmark event in relations between the two countries.
