Record-breaking temperatures in Melbourne

Couldn’t be anything to do with climate change, could it? I predict this will hit Christchurch, NZ in a few days.

Melbourne swelters through record-breaking overnight temperatures around 30C

Melbourne has sweltered through its hottest March night on record with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius for most of the night.

Northerly winds kept temperatures above 30 degrees until midnight when the mercury dipped slightly to 29C.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Rod Dickson said there had been a severe heatwave weather set-up over Victoria for almost a week and the overnight temperature smashed the previous record of 26.9C in 2008.

"[Tuesday] we saw the hot air make its way all the way down the coast including to the Melbourne area with a number of suburban sites setting its hottest March day on record," he said.

"[We're] still expecting pretty hot conditions in the north of the state today though with temperatures around 38 or 39 degrees."

The heat should start to ease off later in the day as a milder southerly wind change makes its way across the state, but the northern parts of Victoria are set for another warm day.

"But it should be the last in the sequence of extremely hot days today with temperatures a little bit milder into Thursday, around the low to mid 30s across northern Victoria and around the mid-20s in the south," Mr Dickson said.

While the humidity will increase with the chance of drizzle overnight the cooler temperatures will make sleeping a lot easier.

"A minimum temperature of 20 degrees is expected in the city but having said that it's a good 10 or 11 degrees lower than last night so it should be much better for sleeping."
