North-south wind circulation - an observation

North-south wind circulation in the Pacific over the equator

Science will tell us that winds circulate from the north down to the equator and from the south up to the equator but the two do not mix.

That was one reason why, for example only the northern hemisphere was supposed to be affected by movement of nuclear radiation. The two hemsipheres, we are told, do not mix.

A Facebook friend, Kirk Norring, has made the following obseravation from earth.nullschool.net

The north-south movement of air across the equator can clearly be seen despite a consensus that this is not possible.

Have a look for yourself.

As pointed out by Kevin Hester, this has ramifications for keeping radiation from Fukushima in the Northern Hemsphere.

How long before we start to register elevated readings Down-Under?
