Sometimes we need a historical reminder that, outside the Baltics, Galicia (and possibly Georgia), no one wanted an end to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The USSR came to an end because of an illegal agreement by Boris Yeltsin with the leaders of Ukraine and Byelorussia.

In the fall of 1991 the working group of the Novo-Ogarevo process prepared a new draft of the Union Treaty on the creation of a "Union of Sovereign States" as a Confederation of Independent States. Its pre-signing was to take place on December 9.

However, on December 8, 1991, the presidents of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, "noting that the negotiations on the preparation of a new Union Treaty stalled, the objective process of the withdrawal of the republics from the USSR and formation of independent States became a real fact", concluded Belovesh agreement establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States, an intergovernmental organization, which has no state status.
