Yesterday's explosion in Donetsk

Following on from yesterday's massive explosion in Donetsk I have given reports from RT and the Ukrainian 'Kyiv Post' as well as conclusions drawn by the Saker last night.

In addition, there has been some speculation from Kevin Blanch that it might have been some form of nuclear explosion.  I agree with his comments about World War 111 and how we are all being lulled to sleep on this major confrontation.

I don't have any expertise that would help me draw any conclusions so have to follow conclusions that this was not a nuclear explosion.

However, looking (as a total non-expert) I have to say that footage of an explosion at a chemical plant last year looks nothing like what happened yesterday.

Therefore I just present the information as I have it and allow you draw your own conclusions

Huge explosion at Donetsk chemical plant, Kiev blames ‘dropped cigarette butt’

RT,

9 February, 2015

Windows were shattered and homes shaken in Donetsk after a huge blast rocked the vicinity of a city chemical plant which was under rebel control. Kiev and the militants accuse each other of causing the blast.

The powerful explosion took place at 10:50pm local time on Sunday. Local militia reported that a military chemical plant DKZHI was the target of Kiev’s artillery shelling.

Witnesses saw the sky lit up by the explosion, some nearby living residents had their windows broken by the blast’s shockwave and many others felt the ground shake, RIA Novosti reported. Even those living in nearby towns said they felt the tremor.

The center of the blast was near DKZHI,” co-chairman of the anti-Kiev People’s Front Konstantin Dolgov said on his Facebook page. The factory is known for producing chemical products used for industrial explosives, ammunition and equipment artillery bombs. This is not the first time the plant has been the target of a Kiev attack. It was also hit with artillery rockets in September and November.

The militia forces would not immediately confirm if there were casualties, either among militiamen or civilians. But they said the fire, which started after the explosion, poses no threat of a chemical spill, which is a cause of great concern at the plant, as it handles toxic compounds in producing explosives.

The fire has been contained. There is not threat of chemical spill… Most likely it was a high-caliber artillery shell,” said an official from the Donetsk People's Republic.

The spokesman for Kiev's Anti-Terrorist Operation said that rebels were at fault for the accident.

"This was caused by a dropped cigarette butt," Andrey Lysenko told the media on Monday.

"Accidents often happen in factories where no one is responsible for fire safety. Well, it's chaos, and they are barbarians."

Not all pro-Kiev officials agreed.

The Ukrainian military deployed a Smerch (the BM-30 Tornado) multiple rocket system to shell the area in the city, Boris Filatov, former deputy head of the industrial Dnepropetrovsk Region and a member of the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada), said on his Facebook page.

According to Filatov, the men who fired the missiles “do not know what they hit because they were shooting based on coordinates.”

Earlier, Ukrainian far-right politician and paramilitary commander Dmitry Yarosh, who is involved in the Kiev military action in southeastern Ukraine, confirmed on his Facebook page that the explosion was caused by Ukrainian artillery.

Yarosh, who is wanted by Interpol on charges of inciting terrorism, was elected to the Rada in October 2014. He played a key role in the protests on Maidan (Kiev’s Independence Square), which led to the toppling of Viktor Yanukovich’s government earlier that year. Back in May, the Right Sector leader received less than 1 percent of the vote in Ukraine’s presidential election.

Meanwhile, the situation in southeastern Ukraine has been rapidly worsening since January 18, when Ukrainian troops have launched a massive assault on militia-held territories after an order from Kiev.

Shelling of the rebel-controlled towns has been witnessed on a daily basis, including the city of Donetsk, with both sides blaming each other for violence. Meanwhile, the indiscriminate shelling of residential areas by Kiev, at times with internationally-prohibited arms, has even been confirmed by the Ukrainian government’s strongest supporter – Washington.

John McCain, US Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, said Kiev used cluster bombs – claiming it’s because Ukrainian troops did not have better weapons delivered to them by the US.

Reports from Donetsk coincided with the latest report from the German intelligence service, which estimates the real losses in the Ukrainian civil war at 50,000 dead (civilians and servicemen). This reported figure is nearly 10 times higher than the death toll named by the Kiev authorities.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian crisis became the center stage of discussions as the world leaders commenced for the Munich Security Conference.

The latest breakthrough was announced on Sunday with plans for ‘Normandy Four’ format peace talks. The meeting may be held in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, as early as Wednesday, the German government said, following a phone call between Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French leader Francois Hollande.

Ukraine intermediate SITREP

1) The explosion in Donetsk:

Russian TV has just shown footage of the crater left by the explosion and it is absolutely huge.  See for yourself:

The crater is about 10m (30 ft) deep.  It is located on the territory of a chemical factory, but it did not hit any of the main buildings.  Whether there was any building at the actual location of the explosion is impossible to tell: the earth is black, all the trees scorched and there is nothing left at all.  DNR experts estimate the blast as being the equivalent of 1 ton of TNT.  The sound of the explosion was heard 50km away.  From the shape of the crater, it doe not appear to be a fuel-air explosive (FAE), but 1 ton of equivalent TNT is way bigger than the 500kg HE warhead the Tochka-U can carry.  This leads me to believe that the Ukrainians might have used a new weapon or, at least, a modified one.  All we know for sure is that it was not a nuclear device.  Also, it makes me wonder what in  the world they were trying to hit - maybe the chemicals factory, but if that it the case, then the missed by 1000m or so.  At this point, I honestly don't know.  I also want to remind everybody that the junta has used White Phosphorus again against its own population:

But the "West" apparently has no problem with any of that and does not care about the laws of war.  What else is knew? .......[ ]

Donetsk chemical plant hit by biggest blast in the war

9 Febraury, 2015

A massive explosion hit Donetsk late on Feb. 8, killing Russian-backed troops and destroying equipment. The incident at the Donetsk State Chemical Plant has been called by some observers the biggest blast during Russia’s war against Ukraine.

According to preliminary information, 20 Grad multiple rocket launchers and 30 vehicles with ammunition were destroyed. Some 200 separatists were also killed by the Ukrainian artillery, Dmytro Yarosh, leader of the Right Sector nationalist party, wrote on Facebook on Feb. 8.

The Ukrainian leadership tends to overestimate separatist casualties as part of the information war, and it is very difficult to correctly count them unless insurgents are killed on Ukrainian-controlled territory, Vyasheslav Tseluiko, an expert at the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies, said by phone.

Borys Filatov, a member of the Vekhovna Rada, wrote on his blog on Feb. 8 that the chemical plant was shelled with Smerch multiple rocket launchers by the same Ukrainian unit that had destroyed insurgent aircraft earlier in January.

We threw two fishing rods with two worms,” Filatov said, citing the metaphor Ukrainian troops allegedly used for the attack.

A Ukrainian-led attack in Donetsk killed as many as 200 Russian-backed soldiers, according to some sources, although that figure cannot be confirmed.

However, there was no official confirmation of the Ukrainian army’s involvement in the incident and the number of casualties and destroyed Бequipment.

Vladislav Seleznyov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s General Staff, said by phone that the cause of the explosion is not clear yet. The plant could have been attacked by Ukrainian troops, Ukrainian guerrilla fighters in Donetsk or separatists, he dded.

Apparently stewed meat from Russia’s 13th humanitarian convoy exploded,” he joked. The joke was an apparent reference to Russia's use of the so-called “humanitarian convoys,” which are sent regularly to Ukraine and are not vetted by any international organizations. The Kremlin insists that the trucks contain food and other necessities, but a recruiter of mercenaries from Ekaterinburg had said the convoys are used to ship arms and fighters to Ukraine's territory.

The National Defense and Security Council said on Feb. 9 that 1,500 Russian soldiers and 300 units of military equipment had crossed the border into Ukraine on Feb. 7-8, when the latest “humanitarian convoy” arrived to Donbas.

Anatoly Stelmakh, a spokesman for the anti-terrorist operation, denied Ukrainian troops’ involvement in the Donetsk explosion.

We know about this explosion but Ukrainian artillery didn’t carry out this strike,” Stelmakh said on Feb. 9, as cited by the censor.net news site. “Given that this is intelligence data, we don’t comment on this information.”

Alone of all mainstream media to report on this, the Huffington Post concludes this was 'just a normal mushroom cloud'

Perhaps they would like to explain what a 'normal' mushroom cloud means.
