Civil Defence is assessing whether a strong earthquake in the Kermadec Islands region could affect New Zealand.

The quake struck 949km north-east of Whakatane at 10:55am, and could possibly generate a tsunami that could affect New Zealand.
"If a tsunami has been generated in this location it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least two hours," Civil Defence warns.
