Huge swells on Australian beaches

Huge swells close most beaches in New South Wales, Australia

16 January, 2018

Wild surf conditions and powerful swells have forced the closure of most patrolled beaches along the NSW coastline.

Bondi, Manly and Maroubra are believed to be the only Sydney beaches still open on Tuesday, as well as Blacksmiths in Lake Macquarie.

Dangerous conditions are expected to continue through the week, with Surf Life Saving NSW urging beachgoers to stay safe

A strong southerly wind creates high seas and swell along the coast of the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney on Tuesday.
"Most of the NSW coastline is experiencing quite large surf today, looking at peaks in excess of three-and-a-half metres so it's quite significant," spokesman Liam Howitt said.

"It looks like it's going to continue for at least the next few days."

Swimmers brave the conditions at the Bronte Beach Ocean Pool on Tuesday.
