5.8-magnitude quake hits Afghanistan

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale has struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, but there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the tremor hit late on Saturday at a depth of 115 kilometers, about 140 kilometers north of the city of Jalalabad and 130 kilometers west of Chitral in neighboring Pakistan, AFP reported.

The quake was also felt in Kabul and in northwestern Pakistan as well as in Islamabad.

Tremors are a regular event in northern Afghanistan, especially around the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

In June, two moderate quakes triggered landslides that killed 75 people in northern Afghanistan.

On May 30, 1998, a quake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck Takhar and Badakhshan provinces.

It was one of Afghanistan’s worst natural disasters in recent years, and over 4,000 people were killed.

In addition, about 7,000 families were affected and approximately 16,000 houses were destroyed or damaged.
