A number of properties have been damaged by bushfires in Batchelor and Tumbling Waters, about an hour south of Darwin.

Bushfires NT are battling fires along Cox Peninsular Road and in Batchelor, and said it was unclear what the extent of the damage as.

Earlier reports indicated houses had been destroyed, but emergency services said it was possible they were sheds or dongas.

Responding to the blazes are 21 grass fire units, three tankers, three water bombers and four helicopters.

The fire is estimated to be eight square kilometres in size.

Windy condition made it difficult for authorities to control the blaze, but they said they were beginning to regain control over parts of it.

Emergency services have re-opened the road between Tumbling Waters and Darwin River Road and are urging drivers to be wary of poor visibility due to the smoke.

The ABC understands fire crews are preparing to burn off sections near the road to help control the blaze and prevent it spreading
