An attack on the US embassy in Baghdad took place today, where hundreds of pro-Iran militia members have stormed the compound in retaliation for American air strikes.

American Marines inside the embassy fired tear gas, stun grenades, and warning shots at hundreds of fighters who broke down the compound gate and set fires within the complex.

The ambassador was on leave at the time of the attack and embassy staff had already been evacuated before the US marine guard became besieged at the compound.

More than 20,000 people arrived in front of the US Embassy in Baghdad at around 4:00 AM East Coast Time this morning, which was around 12 Noon LOCAL time in Baghdad, which is 8 hours ahead of US east coast.

President Trump has vowed to hold Tehran accountable for the embassy attack, which is in retaliation for US air strikes on the Iran-backed Kataeb Hezbollah on Sunday night. Those strikes a retaliation for last week's killing of an American contractor in Kirkuk.

'Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will.' Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning. 'Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!' 

Flames rose from the compound as furious rioters pressed up against the bullet-proof windows within the complex, taunting the US soldiers within and spraying pro-Hezbollah graffiti over the glass.  

Half a dozen US marine guards fired warning shots from the rooftops, followed by tear gas and stun grenades, at rioters who set blazes and smashed up barricades on the ground. 

Protesters set fire to barricades surrounding the compound and hurled rocks. In response, the US marine guards fired warning shots, followed by tear gas and stun grenades launched from rooftops. 

This morning, thousands had attended funerals for the fighters of the Iran-backed Kataeb Hezbollah before rushing through the heavily fortified Green Zone, burning US flags and heading towards the consulate.

US fighter jets bombarded three locations in Iraq on Sunday night, in retaliation for last week's killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack in Kirkuk, 170 miles north of Baghdad. 

The US attack - the largest targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia in recent years - and the calls for retaliation represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the US and Iran playing out in the Middle East. 

Kataeb Hezbollah, which is separate but linked to the Lebanese Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Many are supported by Iran. 

Security guards were seen retreating inside the embassy earlier on Tuesday as protesters hurled water bottles and smashed security cameras outside the buildings. 

They raised yellow Kataeb Hezbollah flags and taunted the embassy's security staff who remained behind the glass windows in the gates' reception area.

They sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows in red in support of the Kataeb Hezbollah militia: 'Closed in the name of the resistance.'

Hundreds of angry protesters, some in militia uniforms, set up tents outside the embassy.

As tempers rose, the mob set fire to three trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.

Twenty people have been reported injured in the carnage. 

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi pleaded with the mob against any aggression towards foreign embassies and representations in Baghdad, asking protesters outside the U.S. embassy to leave 'immediately.'

This is the same modus operandi used by Iran all the way back in 1977 when they stormed our Embassy in Tehran!  They use the same tactics over and over. 

Back then, they took 52 Americans hostage and held them for 444 days.  It wrecked the Presidency of Jimmy Carter.  Maybe Iran is hoping something similar will wreck Trump?  Big mistake.  Trump won't sit-by and do nothing.

Those of you who read the COVERT INTEL about Iran know why this is taking place.  The Iranians feel emboldened and WANT a conflict to use an an excuse to do a particular thing.  Now, they may actually get that conflict.

US aTTACK helicopters hovering over embassy in Iraq broadcast warnings to demonstrators, threatening them if they don’t leave. This comes after Pompeo called Iraq’s PM threatening that he is ready to take action to protect US citizens in Iraq.
