Russia's missiles shot from the Caspian Sea

From Jon Helleweg, via Facebook
Why did Russia shoot missiles from a ship in the Caspian Sea?

Why did Russia have to shoot those missiles from the warships on the Caspian Sea? I cracked up laughing when I just a while ago found out why. A sure sign of getting old when you start getting your kicks from geopolitics.

But it is funny. The thing is connected with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty agreed between USSR and USA in 1987. The treaty eliminated nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with intermediate ranges, defined as between 500-5,500 km (300-3,400 miles). BUT, turns out the USA cunningly exempted from the treaty missiles stationed on ships, the idea being that they had naval superiority. What Russia now did is that they stationed the missiles on ships, albeit ships on their own waters such as the landlocked Caspian Sea. These same ships are actually rivergoing ships and you can move all over Russia by the riverways.

Thus Russia now in full compliance with the treaty have the missiles all over in Russia, on the Russian rivers.

The second surprise was the new missile technology that makes them fly far - we know that at least 1500 km as the ones shot from the Caspian Sea, but most probably even longer. Not only do they fly long, but also low. Flying low they will leave the US East European missile shield literally in limbo, see they will fly right under the shield which is designed to catch the conventional missiles and will not detect these new ones.

The analysts tell us that this all implies a total geopolitical coup as the Russians now have arms that neutralize the NATO threat.

On top of that Russia will get strong permanent naval and aviation bases in the Mediterranean Sea in Syria, extending the range of areas Russia can keep in check. My source, the article (Russian) in below link, tells that on top of the already mentioned goodies there was one more innovation. In addition to the Caspian Sea flotilla, Russia had also used the TU-160 strategic bombers in those missile attacks, and these where equipped with missiles with a range of up to 5,000 kilometers, that is, reaching all the way to the USA when fired from Russian airspace.

A new strategic balance has returned to the World. Now let’s hope the loonies accept this new reality.
