Speak to locals and they will correcty point out that whales get stranded on a regular basis, especially at Farewell Spit. But I am not sure about the scale.
Pilot whales are local but they could be eating fish that migrate.
This has to be seen in the context of the phenomenon of die-offs of birds and higher mammals elsewhere in the Pacific and beyond.
No doubt that life is dying in the Pacific

Nearly 50 whales in latest stranding
Volunteers
and rangers have left 48 whales that have re-stranded at Farewell
Spit for the night, in the hope they will refloat on the incoming
high tide and move off.

The
pilot whales began to strand there again shortly before 4.30pm on
Sunday after being refloated and swimming at sea for several hours.
They
were cared for by about 40 volunteers until dark, when all helpers
and DoC staff had to leave because it was too risky to stay.
Earlier
on Sunday afternoon, the department had attempted to refloat the pod
of 62. Two whales died in that attempt, while 10 did not follow the
main group out to sea and ended up back along the Spit coast.
DoC
says of those 10, two died, and eight were euthanised.
On
Sunday morning nine whales died and on Saturday 40 whales were found
at the beach and despite attempts by volunteers they all either died
or beached again overnight.

Dying En Masse: Signs We’re Next

Videographer
David Vose points out that whales are dying en masse, in another
example of strange animal and sea life behavior. Recently we have
seen birds
falling
out of the
sky dead,
Bald
Eagles dying in Utah,
starfish
turning to goo,
multiple species of sea life gravitating
to areas
in record breaking numbers and 98
percent of the Pacific ocean floor is littered with death
– yet the “official” reports claim that each instance has a
different cause, from global warming to West Niles virus, yet with
the massive radiation coming from the cripple Fukushima nuclear
plant, some might ask if that could be the cause, but the majority of
the MSM refuse to even consider it, while the government turns off
their radiation monitors (or claim they have) and say “everything
is fine.”
Today
it is the whales…… will humans be tomorrow?
