Terrorists seeking to do away with former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri ahead of a verdict in a trial of the killing of his father could be behind the blasts that rocked Beirut on Tuesday. According to another version, the cause of the tragedy lies in tensions on the border with Israel, said experts interviewed by Izvestia. The first explosion occurred in the Lebanese capital’s port, where, according to preliminary reports, explosives detonated at a storage facility. Fifteen minutes later, another, much bigger blast took place close to Hariri’s residence in the city center. Reports say that hundreds were killed and up to 3,000 people suffered injuries.
Political scientist Roland Bidzhamov believes that the blasts could have been carried out in order to frame the pro-Iranian Hezbollah group as it is what both domestic and foreign players - including the US, Saudi Arabia and Israel - are interested in. "The situation comes amid a deep political and economic crisis in Lebanon. In fact, the country has come to the brink of civil war, just like it was in the mid-1970s," the expert explained.
Prime Minister Saad Hariri stepped down last fall following mass protests in Beirut and Tripoli, and the country’s parliament backed Hassan Diab, a compromise candidate, for prime minister. However, once the coronavirus pandemic started to decline in mid-April, the Lebanese people took to the streets once again, protesting against economic reforms urged by the International Monetary Fund.
Meanwhile, the Al-Hadath TV channel has reported that the Israeli air force carried out airstrikes on military warehouses in Beirut port, which could have been used for storing Iranian weapons.
Israeli military expert Yakov Kedmi explained that Israel did not have a reason to carry out missile strikes on Beirut port because no benefit would come from an attack on a peaceful commercial port. "Beirut port's warehouses may pose a threat only if they are involved in weapons supplies from Iran. But even in this case, no one would have used such a method to destroy them," the expert emphasized.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a video Friday to his social media
accounts that he said highlights examples of “incitement” against him at recent
anti-government protests.
The video clip, posted to the premier’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
pages, opens with the text, “The incitement to murder PM Benjamin
Netanyahu and his family is breaking records.”
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah threatened in the past to destroy Israel by causing a massive explosion in the port of Haifa using ammonia tanks that he said would be like a “nuclear” explosion. In addition Hezbollah allegedly sought to acquire ammonium nitrate via Syria since 2009 and tried to infiltrate the agriculture ministry in Lebanon to do so, according to leaked diplomatic cables.
The archival footage has been circulating in the wake of the massive explosion in Lebanon that killed more than 100 and injured 4,000 and has left hundreds missing. It illustrates Hezbollah’s terrorist strategy of targeting civilians for mass murder, despite the organization’s claim that it is “resisting” Israel by defending Lebanon.
Physical and metaphorical smoke may obscure the picture of Tuesday’s enormous explosion in Beirut for some time.
But the event itself has already riled Israelis about what might happen with chemical facilities and other sensitive infrastructure on the Jewish state’s home front.
“We need to remove the dangerous chemicals from the Haifa Bay,” said Likud MK Gila Gamliel to 103FM. “The plan is to remove the [chemicals] within five years and then [take] another five years to clean the area.”
The mayor of Haifa voiced concern on Wednesday that the “horror scenario” gripping Beirut could unfold in the northern Israeli port city, a day after blasts in Lebanon’s capital claimed the lies of at least 100 people and wounded thousands.
Calls to speed efforts to move potentially dangerous oil and chemical factories out of the densely populated Haifa area before disaster strikes came thick and fast in the wake of the massive explosion at the port of Beirut, which was linked to stockpiles of some 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate.
Close to residential areas housing 900,000 people, the Haifa Bay in northern Israel is home to the country’s biggest industrial area. It has two ports and more than 60 industrial plants including oil refineries and processing factories, power plants and storage facilities. It is crossed by major national road systems along which hundreds of thousands of people drive each day.

Until recently, the military application of relatively high-energy lasers has been more science fiction than reality. That is starting to change.
Israel’s Ministry of Defense announced Jan. 8 a “breakthrough” in its development of laser technology to intercept aerial threats. This technological milestone promises to strengthen Israel’s lower-tier missile defense and provides another opportunity for U.S.-Israel research and development cooperation.
In 2006, the same Israeli committee that recommended the development of Iron Dome for short-range missile defense also recommended that Israel continue R&D to develop a solid-state laser for the same purpose.
Last week’s announcement demonstrates the prescience of that recommendation.
Israeli government scientists and industry partners have developed a solid-state laser source capable of producing a coherent beam, based on several smaller laser modules, strong enough to intercept lower-tier rockets and missiles.
I am not sure that this Bill passed Congress but the transfer is real.

The US House of Representatives passed a $740.5 billion National Defense Authorization Act for 2021 on Tuesday that includes the continuation of American assistance to Israel for missile-defense programs and other initiatives.
The Pentagon blueprint for the upcoming year allocates $500 million towards missile-defense systems in Israel such as the Iron Dome, David's Sling, and Arrow 3 in accordance with the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, between the United States and Israel worth $38 billion over a decade….
….There are no conditions on US military assistance to Israel, despite a number of Democrats and organizations that have called for conditioning US assistance to the Jewish state in response to its plans to apply sovereignty to parts of the West Bank, also known as Judea and Samaria.

A large fire broke out at a market in Ajman, an emirate of the United Arab Emirates, according to numerous local news sources.
A massive fire appeared to engulf the fruits and vegetables market in Ajman’s industrial area at around 6:30 p.m. local time, and was brought under control in three hours, according to Khaleej Times
