A magnitude 5.7 quake has struck near Christchurch early this afternoon, causing part of the cliff to collapse into the sea at Taylors Mistake near Sumner.

The 1.13pm quake was centred 15km east of Christchurch, at a depth of 31km, Geonet reports.

I thought I tidied this room.

It comes just eight days short of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch magnitude 6.3 quake which claimed the lives of 185 people.

Today's quake was felt from Dunedin to Auckland.
