It's
not so unusual that Southeast Alaska gets lots of rain.
What
was so unusual about Tuesday was that we received so much rain that
caused numerous landslides in January, typically one of our coldest
months! Southeast also had significant wind with the flooding.
The wind was the extra ingredient that moved the root systems to set
off the landslides.
The
NWS and local governments are still assessing the damage. Damage
reported included: a home shifting off its foundation pad due to
flooding and landslide, a landslide and trails washing out in Sitka,
several cities reported losing power due to landslides, Point Baker
had several boats sink due to too much rainfall and additional damage
was sustained at the Gustavus dock when the breakwater and float
broke free.
