Thousands
of dead fish in Olympic rowing venue
A
huge clean-up is underway after thousands of dead fish filled the
Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The
lagoon is set to host the rowing events when Brazil hosts the 2016
Olympic Games.
The
fish suffocated after heavy rains washed rotting plants into the
water, causing oxygen levels in the water to drop, New
Scientist
reported.
Workers
have cleared 65 tonnes of dead fish since Monday, according to the
Brazilian broadcaster Terra.
This
is not the first environmental scare for the lagoon. For many years
it has been plagued by sewage, pollution, blooms of algae and poor
drainage to the sea, which have caused massive fish casualties,
reports New
Scientist.
