The biggest clue to the state of Arctic ice is not just sea ice extent but sea ice volume or thickness.

The prognoses one might make may be, in part, determined by what data set you use.


This shows sea ice 2-4 meters thick, which is quite different from the US Navy site I usually use.I have found these figures are not well borne out by satellite pictures.

Another important indicator of the state of sea ice is the level of salinity, which is particularly high in the Atlantic sector.


Finally, there are signs of contradictions between data sets, if not an altering of data
