Arthur
to Impact Land as a Category 2 Hurricane
Hurricane
Arthur is the first storm of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season and
it’s expected to make landfall as Category 2 hurricane late tonight
or early tomorrow morning.
3 July, 2014
The
National Hurricane Center in Miami puts Arthur about 260 miles
southwest of Cape Hatteras , moving north-northeast at 10-mph. Arthur
currently has sustained winds of 90-mph and further intensification
is expected. Reconnaissance aircraft are flying regularly into the
storm and continue to find a well-organized storm with a well-defined
center of circulation and robust convection. An eye also appears to
be developing on satellite, which is further indication of a strong
storm.
Hurricane
warnings have been issued for much of the North Carolina coast, from
Surf City to the border with Virginia – including the Pamlico Sound
and eastern Ablemarle Sound. Additionally, a hurricane watch has been
issued from Little River Inlet to Surf City. Tropical storm warnings
are also in effect from the South Santee River, S.C. to Surf City,
N.C. and from the Virginia/North Carolina border to Cape Charles
Light, Va – including the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.
Forecast
models have the storm picking up steam and it’s likely to make
landfall around 12 a.m. EDT. Arthur is closing in on Category 2
strength and is likely to max out around 105 mph as it crosses the
Outer Banks of North Carolina. So if you live in Wilmington,
Swansboro, Cape Hatteras and the surrounding areas pay close
attention to warnings and heed all evacuation orders.
Storm
surge will also be a major concern, wave heights about 50 miles
offshore are over 24 feet. People in low-lying areas and on barrier
islands should be cognizant of this.
Once
it passes the Outer Banks, Arthur will race up the East Coast and
could brush parts of New England Friday afternoon, but its effects
will be limited on the Northeast. Once Monday rolls around Arthur
will be extra-tropical and out over the northern Atlantic. Arthur
could even impact the southern tip of Greenland with tropical storm
force winds.
