The reason there is slice missing out of this image is because this is an image from 09 10 2015 and it hasn't competed. Notice the large pink area has rotated to the right side. Now the thin ice is up against open water.

Arctic Sea Ice 09 08 2015 and 09 09 2015

The Arctic Sea Ice detached from land and it is rotating.

Part of the reason it detached from land and became free floating is because of lack of multi year ice that used to jam up against Canada and Greenland.
