May
8, 2015. TYPHOON NOUL APPROACHES LUZON AT CAT-4 STRENGTH, WIDESPREAD
FLOODING EXPECTED BEFORE IT TURNS NORTHWARD, WEAKENING; SEVERE STORM,
SOON-TO-BE-NAMED ...
Thursday,
May 7, 2015, 4:25 PM - Typhoon Noul -- or Dodong, as it has been
designated in the Philippines -- is gaining intensity and expected to
make landfall in the northeastern Philippines this weekend.
The
storm could be the equivalent of a Category 2 or 3 hurricane with
peak winds over 160 kph when it hits land late Saturday or early
Sunday.
Noul
brought heavy rain and strong winds to the island of Yap in
Micronesia Wednesday. It is currently moving northwest but is
expected to take a more northerly track as it closes in on the
Philippines.
Current
forecasts predict Noul will track over northeastern portions of Luzon
before moving towards Taiwan.
Manila,
the capital city of the Philippines, should escape the brunt of the
storm but the area could see showers and thunderstorms through the
weekend.
Luzon
is expected to see the worst damage, with as much as 200 mm of rain
expected. In some localized areas, up to 300 mm could fall.
Moisture
from Noul could enhance rain over Japan next week and elevate the
risk of flooding.
