The Sochi Olympics opened

Of course there's corruption; the threat of terrorism hangs over the games and the gay rights demonstations are an exercise in hypocrisy.

I doubt that there will ever be a lavish display again.

Sochi Olympics lavish ceremony opens games


Russia has spent more than $50bln to stage the Winter games in Sochi. The lavish opening ceremony took place in front of a crowd of about 40 thousand people. The games though have been overshadowed by claims of corruption, security fears and human rights concerns. Al Jazeera's Rory Challands has more from Sochi
