Earthquake in Myanmar

6.6 quake strikes Myanmar
A strong earthquake has struck northern Myanmar, causing residents to flee their homes.

11 November, 2012

The magnitude-6.6 temblor hit the area at 2.12pm today (NZ time) according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake had a depth of just 10 kilometres and hit 117 kilometres north of Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city.

Four residents of Mandalay, contacted by phone, said the quake was strong enough to send people dashing out of their homes for safety.

They said they saw no major structural damage in their immediate neighbourhoods.

The epicentre of the quake is a region frequently hit by small quakes that usually cause little damage.

The quake was felt in Bangkok, the capital of neighbouring Thailand.

It comes just a week ahead of a visit to Myanmar by US President Barack Obama. Obama will be the first US president to visit the one-time pariah nation, which is emerging from decades of military rule.

A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck eight miles west of Whitesburg, Ky., early Saturday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of the shallow, light earthquake was 0.7 miles deep under the Appalachian Mountains town of Blackey, near the Virginia border, the agency said.
There were no immediate reports of damage in the eastern Kentucky area.

The tremor was felt from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Atlanta, Ga., USGS geophysicist Paul Caruso in Denver told NBC News.

Normally, we don’t expect major damage with this kind of intensity,” but it’s “not out of the question” that there could be some — usually, major damage is expected when magnitude is 5.5 or higher, Caruso said.....
