This is quite a day for me. Two of my favourite truth tellers on the covid-19 pLandemic, Dr. Rashid Buttar and Billy te Kahika of the New Zealand Public party come together in a wide-ranging conversation.
I was deeply impressed with Dr. Buttar' s deep knowledge of New Zealand as he expresses how shocked he was, when he moved here to find the degree to which the country relies on toxic pesticides and herbicides and leads the world in some of the cancers associated with its use.
Also, there are only two countries that allow for commercial advertising of pharmaceutical drugs - the United States and New Zealand.
This is truly disturbing, especially on the heels of yesterday’s post and the revelations from the Taupo area where a hunter reports the same after SIXTY PLUS YEARS of 1080 treatment. The poison simply is not working, and worse it is decimating our native birds. Kea are nearing extinction (here also) and remember this post also about the 10K birds killed in one drop. When is this madness going to be looked at with independent eyes, independent research and an eye for alternatives. They are aerially treating areas that could be easily trapped while saying they only aerially treat inaccessible places.

The Makarora area of Mt Aspiring National Park was aerially 1080-poisoned on 15 October, 2019 – the Wilkin, Fish, Blue, Cameron, Makarora and Young Valleys.
Yesterday I was told that the old six-bunk forestry hut at Top Forks, Wilkin River Valley, is being restored, and the workers restoring it are living there while it is restored. They say there is absolutely nothing left alive up there. It is as silent as the grave…. no birds, no insects, NOTHING !
Extraordinarily, even though the area was poisoned only two weeks ago there are NO warning signs on any of the DoC online track information on the Young Valley Track, Cameron Valley Track, Blue-Young Valley Track, etc! There will be dead carcasses and baits in the streams and rivers. Innocent tourist trampers from overseas will drink from the streams.
This is a seminal documentary - of great importance to me personally - that I have tried to find again. I never realised that it had been SUPPRESSED, on the grounds this information would "damage the New Zealand economy"

BSA Complaint against TV3’s ‘Let Us Spray’ doco upheld
A long-running complaints inquiry by the Broadcasting Standards Authority has just come to a conclusion, with the authority upholding complaints from Crown research institute ESR and the Ministry of Health against TV3’s 2006 documentary Let Us Spray and a news item screened on TV3’s 6pm bulletin the following night (October 24, 2006).
The BSA said in its decision on the documentary Let Us Spray: “In conclusion, the Authority has found that aspects of the broadcast of Let Us Spray breached standards of balance and fairness. The broadcaster failed to make reasonable efforts to include significant perspectives on the serum study and the health effects of dioxin, and this in turn led to ESR being treated unfairly.”
The BSA added: “The Authority points out that its findings on this occasion should not be viewed as restricting legitimate investigation and criticism of actions by government departments. It has commented above that this was an important story which deserved to be told; the people of Paritutu were entitled to express their beliefs about dioxin and how the government had failed them. However, it is essential that investigations into controversial issues of public importance be presented in a fair and balanced way. This ensures that viewers are adequately informed of the issues, and that the people and organisations being criticised have a reasonable opportunity to put forward their side of the story.”

“Let Us Spray was a 90-minute programme which screened at 7.30pm on a Monday evening, a slot usually reserved for the current affairs programme 60 Minutes. It was billed as a TV3 Special Investigation, and was presented by a well-known journalist and regular reporter for 60 Minutes, Melanie Reid, who introduced the programme as being ‘the result of a year-long investigation’. She went on to describe it as ‘a 90-minute special documentary’. This framing is important to the Authority’s consideration of balance.”
This is how Let Us Spray was pitched in a backgrounder on TV3’s website:
“TV3’s Melanie Reid, the Investigative Reporter of the Year, presented a 90-minute documentary entitled A TV3 Special Investigation: Let Us Spray on Monday 23rd October at 7pm.
“For the past year, Reid has been investigating New Zealand and dioxin – in particular the potentially lethal dioxin contained in the herbicide 245T.
“For decades, many New Zealanders have been convinced that their illnesses and those of their children were caused by exposure to this dioxin. Of most concern are the people of Paritutu, the New Plymouth suburb where for several decades the agrichemical company, Ivon Watkins Dow (IWD) made 245T and 24D.
“Reid examined the many reported cases of birth defects in New Plymouth and around the country and discovered a doubling of birth defects coincided with the country’s maximum exposure to the 245T dioxin.

Newshub
can reveal that the Prime Minister has received multiple threats from
anti-1080 extremists - including at least one threatening her life.
Violence
and threats of violence by the fringe protesters have spiked, and
Jacinda Ardern says she has serious concerns for the safety of
Department of Conservation (DoC) workers.
A
peaceful anti-1080 protest was held down the road from the Labour
Party conference over the weekend, well away from Ms Ardern and her
family.

told Newshub she's received at least one death threat from anti-1080
extremists.
"I've
had some incidents that I've been made aware of, but to be honest
some of my greater concern is with those on the front line who
receive these threats a bit more directly and a bit more personally."
One
person posted on DoC's Facebook page warned that if their own
daughter was poisoned by 1080, "I myself will find each of you
DoC muppets and slaughter the skin off your faces and have you living
inches before death."
Conservation

just threats, but potentially deadly action.

Threats
and harassment against DoC staff have shot up this year. In January,
five incidents were recorded. That number peaked at 93 incidents last
month, but DoC is being more robust in its reporting.
Ms
Ardern says the Government welcomes protest, but it's gone too far.
"When
we see that tip into violence or threats of violence against people
working on the front line and doing their job, then that concerns
me."
False
information is increasingly used to further the anti-1080 cause, such
as pictures of dead kiwi that were actually killed by dogs and cars
and the notorious dead birds dumped at Parliament with no traces of
1080 in their systems.
"They
are spreading fake news about the impact of 1080," says Ms Sage.
It
might be fake news, but the threats are very real.

Bearing
in mind the clearly unacceptable level of violence associated with
the use of 1080 and other poison in New Zealand please advise what
advice you have sought to modify the way the Department of
Conservation uses poison to take into account the widespread
community concerns about the way these deadly poison baits are
distributed over our forests, land, water courses and directly into
freshwater.
Please
provide copies of all such advice and the options considered to
address this including for example:
a)
reviewing the ethics, feasibility and costs (in financial and other
terms) of John Keys’ 2050 Predator Free Strategy;
b)
reviewing the costs and benefits of the objective of exterminating
possums bearing in mind the false and unscientific assumption used to
justify this violence, the absence of evidence of any TB being spread
by possums to cows and the lost opportunity for income from trapping
and sale of possum fur and fibre;
c)
the lack of information about what cumulative exposure to 1080 is
safe for pregnant women and for babies and toddlers – including
from drinking water, wild foods, dust and other exposure;
d)
the apparent lack of peer reviewed evidence to show any significant
benefits from aerial use of 1080 poison bearing in mind the
information used by DoC for the imminent proposed Kahurangi 1080 drop
that 1080 is typically effective to reduce rat numbers for only 3
months- which is typically followed by an explosion in rat numbers –
yet best practice is to use 1080 only once every four years due to
DoC’s research which shows that target species become bait shy and
their is no significant reduction in target species numbers if 1080
is used in successive years.

A
Newshub investigation has uncovered a dumpsite of the poison 1080 in
a national park on Stewart Island.
As
much as 75 kilograms of the poison was dumped by a contractor working
for the Department of Conservation (DoC), which has now called in
police and other authorities.
The
pristine New Zealand bush on the island is remote and unspoilt - but
the dump had enough poison to kill potentially hundreds of animals.
DoC
contracted out the job of disposing of the 1080 to Tony Leith - one
of New Zealand's most experienced poison operators.
Isaac
was a former worker on the 1080 operation. Workers like Isaac - who
did not want his last name used - were meant to put the 1080 in bait
bags then staple them up in trees.
That’s
because if the 1080 hits the ground it will kill anything that eats
it - including our indigenous kiwi. Even eating insects or bugs that
have ingested it can harm them.
However
despite the instructions they received, Isaac says he helped his boss
dump the poison in a swamp.
After
quitting the job, he decided to speak out after feeling guilty when
he saw a photo of a dead kiwi found on the island. Its death was
blamed on 1080.
While
there is no direct link between the death and the 1080 find, the
picture of the kiwi was the catalyst for Isaac coming forward as he
realised other kiwi could be at risk.
"Sadly
I was involved in this job. People will want to know what actually
happened," he told Newshub.
"If
an animal had eaten it would have died. A cruel and painful death,
the way 1080 kills."
Isaac
led Newshub to Stewart Island - and Rakiura National Park.
Isaac
says three 25kg bags of 1080 were dumped there - two full, one with
some in it.
"It
was dumped in water, so it’s sinking," Isaac told Newshub.
The
1080 was put in the swamp across five months this year in what is
called the 'Rakeahua Block'. The dump site is close to the Rakeahua
River mouth, just 30 metres off a public track - and the dead kiwi
was found about 10 kilometres away, at Doughboy Bay.
"You
can't just let people away with this," Isaac says.
DoC
says the poison has been removed and an investigation is underway
into the contractor's actions.
"I
am disappointed and angry that the important pest control work
carried out by DOC has been undermined by the actions of an
individual contractor," says Reg Kemper, DoC's acting deputy
director general for operations.
"DoC
requires contractors using pesticides are required by law to comply
with Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act.
"The
investigation underway right now will determine what legal
consequences the contractor may face."
Poison
in the bush - raising big questions about 1080.
I
have been requested to amend (which means remove) the video clip
about the Medical Officer of Health permitting 1080 poison bait to be
dropped directly into water around Turangi, and the Tongariro
Crossing. It was loaded a couple of days ago, but I have been asked
to amend it, because the MoH stated he was concerned for the safety
of staff, after a name was accidentally left on the poison approval
document contained in the video clip. The clip has now been removed,
and is RELOADED here, with the amendment. Please share it. The
question is, what about the safety of the people that drink the water
around Turangi, and the Tongariro Crossing – let alone the rotting
carcasses that end up polluting waterways for months after – what
about the safety of the public, from the poisons that the Medical
Officer of Health has approved to be aerially spread across land and
water??? (The choppers have been seen spreading pre-feed bait, today)

New
Zealand’s Department of Conservation is almost certainly killing
kiwi with its controversial 1080 poison drops says a hunting and
conservation group, the Sporting Hunters’ Outdoor Trust. The
department aerially top-dresses public lands and national parks with
1080 under the guise of predator control aimed to kill rats and the
Australian marsupial possums. Recently the department changed
justifying its reason for using the poison from rats and herbivore
possum to blaming dogs on the North Island’s scenic Coromandel
Peninsula.
But
the department has been challenged by the Sporting Hunters Outdoor
Trust on credibility grounds.
Sparking
the latest criticism of the department’s use of 1080 was a comments
from the Department of Conservation’s Threatened Species Ambassador
Nicola Toki that dogs are to blame for the decline in kiwi numbers on
the Coromandel Peninsula. But the trust said while some dogs may from
time to time kill kiwi, many more were being killed directly by the
toxin or indirectly through secondary poison when an invertebrate
such as worms were dying from the slow acting poison. In addition the
toxin was killing inverterbrate food of the kiwi.
The
trust’s spokesman Laurie Collins of West Coast said Nicola Toki on
TV One’s breakfast show blamed dogs but failed to mention that the
ecosystem poison 1080 had been dropped over most of the Coromandel by
the Department of Conservation.”
“Nicola
Toki doesn’t seem to understand or perhaps even know that 1080 was
developed in the 1920s as an insecticide,” he said. “It therefore
kills invertebrates such as worms and cicada larvae which form a
major part of the kiwi’s food. Diminish the food supply and you
diminish the number of kiwi. It’s so basic. Our national icon is
being both killed and starved to death.”
Laurie
Collins said kiwi lived in a range of habitats, from mountain slopes
to exotic pine forests, and kiwi diet could vary.
“However
most of their food is invertebrates particularly native worms.
Luckily for kiwi, New Zealand is rich in worms, with 178 native
species. Cicada larva are favoured too. But since 1080 is an
insecticide it will understandably severely reduce cicada and larva
worm numbers.”
It
had been acknowledged that the kiwi’s diet was closely related to
its breeding success as the birds needed to build up large reserves
to get through the breeding season.
While
the occasional “rogue” dog or household pet taken for a walk
might savage a kiwi, far greater kiwi losses were likely to occur
from kiwi ingesting 1080 and more particularly from poor breeding due
to depleted food supply lessened by 1080 killing invertebrate kiwi
food sources.
Laurie
Collins said the research was there but DoC ignored it because its
obsession with spreading 1080 from the Government’s SOE supplying
the poison.
In
the mid-1990s government entomologist scientist Mike Meads after a
research study after 1080 had been dropped, predicted that “continued
1080 airdrops over New Zealand forests would destroy much of the food
supply of ground eating birds like the kiwi.”
Scientist
Mike Meads warned that because 1080 wiped out many leaf-consuming
insects and micro-organisms, the litter failed to properly decompose
and built up at an alarming rate.
He
was quoted as saying there was already an amazing leaf build-up in
some lowland forests because without the organisms, after 1080 aerial
drops, the leaf litter was not decomposing. Complicating the matter
was the unusually long life cycle of many forest invertebrates, e.g.
cicada has a 17 year life cycle, weta two years. One air drop of 1080
can wipe out 17 generations of cicada larvae and they and wetas were
important in the kiwi’s diet.
Mike
Meads warned “widespread aerial distribution can only have serious
long term effects on forests and forest life with enormous risk of
destroying the ecosystem.”
“But
DoC did not want to know that so they pilloried Mike Meads, and
dumped his research,’ said Laurie Collins. “Since 1994 and Mike
Meads work, the kiwi and its food supply have suffered numerous
poison drops.”
Poisoning
Paradise - Ecocide New Zealand - Festival Version
The
fatalities related to circumstances created by the hurricane are
still mounting with each passing day, and official numbers are not
counting patients who are not receiving dialysis, oxygen and other
essential services, such as Pedro Fontánez, 79, who is bedridden at
the PavÃa Hospital in Santurce and who the institution is attempting
to release since Saturday, while he lacks electricity at home to
support the oxygen and gastric tube-feeding he needs to continue
living. His daughter, Nilka Fontánez, showed up desperate at the
government’s Emergency Operations Center asking for help, but was
told they were not accepting patients there.
“There’s
no information,” she said, frustrated.
The
dead are at the hospital morgues, which are at capacity and in remote
places where the government has yet to go, and in many cases, their
families are unaware of the deaths. The Demographic Registry
certifies the deaths so bodies can be removed by funeral homes, many
of which are also not operating for a lack of resources and fuel.
They barely began certifying some of the dead on Monday, as Health
Secretary Rafael RodrÃguez-Mercado confirmed in an interview.
A
week after MarÃa’s passage, the government of Puerto Rico is
trying with great difficulty to supply basic services, such as fuel,
roads and communications and tells the world every day of the
progress of these efforts through their press conferences at the
Emergency Operations Center (COE, for its initials in Spanish)
established in San Juan. But the fact that is not discussed is that
the number of deaths resulting from the disaster are much higher than
the 16 or 19 that have been offered as the official tally.
CPI
sources in half a dozen hospitals said those bodies are piling up at
the morgues of the 69 hospitals in Puerto Rico, of which 70% are not
operating. The majority of the hospital morgues that provided
information including the Medical Center in Bayamón and Santurce,
PavÃa Hospital in Santurce, the Manatà Medical Center, Dr. Pila in
Ponce, the RÃo Piedras Medical Center, the Mayagüez Medical Center
and the HIMA hospitals in Caguas and Bayamón, are at full capacity.
Those hospitals are among the 18 that are partially operational.
Furthermore,
this media outlet learned that the Institute of Forensic Sciences is
also full of bodies and that allegedly 25 of those are hurricane
victims. On Tuesday, the IFS informed that it had increased its
storage capacity for bodies with a trailer that was obtained through
The Morgue federal program.
It’s
unclear what is happening with the deceased that are at the morgues
of the 51 hospitals that have had to close their doors, with which it
has been impossible to communicate.
Secretary
RodrÃguez-Mercado acknowledged that hospital morgues are full,
including the one at the Medical Center in Mayagüez. He said the
accumulated bodies cannot be removed from the morgues by funeral
homes until the deaths can be certified by the Demographic Registry,
who barely began operating from regional emergency centers on Monday.
Furthermore,
the doctor acknowledged that the hurricane-related deaths are many
more than those officially documented so far. As he said Monday, the
three hospitals he visited that day in the island’s western region,
during the first contact he was able to achieve with that region, he
documented seven additional deaths “to the 19” that had been
revealed so far. That same afternoon, Gov. Ricardo Rosselló said the
official figure of hurricane-related deaths was still 16.
“We’re
finding dead people, people who have been buried. Related to the
hurricane (we have) 19 dead, which the governor reported, but
[people] have made common graves. We’ve been told people have
buried their family members because they’re in places that have yet
to be reached,” the Secretary told the CPI, while visibly shaken.
The
scenario is not optimistic. The hospitals that closed their doors
during the week that the emergency has lasted have more than 4,000
beds, and when asked what happened to those patients, where they were
transferred, the Secretary responded with a sincere “I don’t
know.”
Patients
Arriving in Critical Condition
CPI
sources said that in just two of the hospitals that are operating,
they were they able to document a dozen deaths among patients that
were transferred out of the closed-down hospitals. Furthermore, they
pointed out that the problem is that patients are arriving in
critical condition, with ventilators, for example, and with poorly
documented records regarding what had happened at the institution
where they were hospitalized. For that reason, and the limitation of
resources and fuel for power generators, the majority of hospitals
that are “operational” are not accepting transfers or new
patients, they said. The RÃo Piedras Medical Center, the
government’s main hospital for this disaster and the only tertiary
hospital in Puerto Rico, has been operating at half capacity.
RodrÃguez-Mercado
said Wednesday that on that same day, they would meet with
specialized authorities from the U.S. Department of Health to discuss
the protocols used to handle cadavers to prevent a budding public
health problem. He said the current protocol for disposing bodies and
vegetative material in emergency situations is managed by the
Environmental Quality Board. But soon after, the president of that
agency, Tania Vázquez, said in an interview that her agency only
oversees the protocol related to disposing of animals, not human
beings, but added that burying a dead person without a certification
of the death is a crime. As of press time, the RRosselló’s press
secretary had not responded to a petition to clear up who is
responsible for the protocol for these emergency burials.
Meanwhile,
the dead continue to accumulate as a result of the chaos in the
health system due to a lack of diesel and the absence of a
communications plan between the system’s components, and these must
be added to those who are in areas that still lack communication and
those in remote areas.
“We’re
fighting. I would love for the government to understand that it has
to open dialysis centers. If they don’t receive the service, the
patients’ health is compromised quickly and they die. And yes, they
have died,” Armando RodrÃguez, vice president of Grupo HIMA
confessed when confirming that the morgues of his two hospitals in
Bayamón and Caguas is above capacity.
Meanwhile,
thousands of doctors and nurses are literally at home unable to work,
said Dr. JoaquÃn Vargas, president of the Puerto Rico Primary
Physicians Groups Association, who was at the COE to see if the
government would set up an operations center where they could at
least answer calls from citizens.
The
CPI also learned that a large portion of specialized physicians is
unable to work because hospitals don’t have supplies and the
ability to conduct their procedures, nor basic resources such as fuel
or electricity to run their medical practices.

After
first tour of Puerto Rico, top general calls damage ‘the worst he’s
ever seen’
Lt.
Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, the Department of Defense's primary
military liaison with FEMA, toured the damage in Puerto Rico for the
first time Saturday on a helicopter ride from San Juan to Ceiba.
After landing at a hangar in Ceiba with no power, no internet and no
cellular service to join other Marines that had already been there
for days, Buchanan spoke with PBS NewsHour.
"Sometimes
we don't know what's going to happen until the storm actually hits,
and this is the worst I've ever seen," Buchanan said.
