A
gas explosion has been reported at the Hyatt Regency Churchill hotel
in London. The building is reportedly being evacuated.
At
least five people might have been injured in the explosion that took
place in the kitchen area of the hotel, according to The
Telegraph. Some reports suggest the blast happened in the
basement of the building.
“There
was a gas explosion in the kitchen area of the hotel and we believe
five people were injured. They are being treated by London Ambulance
crews,” a
Scotland Yard spokesman said.
Police
and fire brigades have been deployed to the scene. The area
around the hotel has been closed off with police reportedly treating
it as a crime scene.
The
evacuated hotel guests have gathered in hotel ballroom next door
as emergency services reportedly need to use adjoining
hotel to treat a “small
number” of
injured.
The
hotel management is “currently
investigating further into the situation and working with the
emergency response team,” Hyatt
Churchill said in its official Twitter account.
