Talking
to a permaculture friend in Wellington today,he is reporting the
first difficulties with pollination of crops and we have noticed a
lack of bees on our section that are usually plentiful. Signs of
things to come
---SMRBee Die offs and How they
will Effect us
1) A
new study out of Harvard University, published in the June edition of
the Bulletin of Insectology puts the nail in the coffin,
neonicotinoids are killing bees at an exponential rate, they are the
direct cause of the phenomenon labeled as colony collapse disorder
(CCD). Neonicotinoids are the world’s most widely used
insecticides. http://www.collective-evolution.com/2014/05/15/new-harvard-study-proves-why-the-bees-are-all-disappearing/
2) This article is indicative of the terminal decline our planet is in and how extremely well educated academics can fail to see the wood for the trees! 23% of one of the most important species on the planet dies off and the scientists can see a bright side, ""It's better news than it could have been," said Dennis van Engelsdorp, a University of Maryland entomology professor who led the survey. "It's not good news."""It's encouraging that if anything it's not a steady downward trend," said University of Illinois entomology professor May Berenbaum, who wasn't part of the survey of 7,200 beekeepers."Spin that for the 6p.m. news and hey wow, Did you hear about the big fight in the lift??????

3) Varrora mite, neonicotinoid and climate change are probably all involved""Yearly fluctuations in the rate of losses like these only demonstrate how complicated the whole issue of honey bee [health] has become, with factors such as viruses and other pathogens, parasites like varroa mites, problems of nutrition from lack of diversity in pollen sources, and even sublethal effects of pesticides combining to weaken and kill bee colonies,"Naturally Monsanto aren't taking the Blame, "But neonicotinoid producers, including Bayer AG, Monsanto Co and DuPont, argue that mites - not their products - are to blame for the devastating loss."

4) This is a really good article that covers BEE die offs and the possible links to Nicotinoids and Colony Collapse Disorder, CCD.It wavers on implying that Nicotinoids may not be the cause of CCD, I have my doubts about that. The Verroa mite arrived or at least was first spotted in NZ in 2012 and we have suffered major cases of CCD and a declining Bee population which is very scary for our agriculture based economy.

(NaturalNews) Amid all the controversy over genetically-modified (GM) crops and their pesticides and herbicides decimating bee populations all around the world, biotechnology behemoth Monsanto has decided to buy out one of the major international firms devoted to studying and protecting bees.

If
you like to eat, then you should care about what’s happening to
bees. Did you know that two-thirds of our food crops require
pollination – the very foods that we rely on for healthy
eating – such as apples, berries, and almonds, just to name a few.
That’s why the serious declines in bee populations are getting more
attention, with entire campaigns devoted to saving bees.
A
strong and growing body of evidence points to exposure to a class of
neurotoxic pesticides called neonicotinoids—the fastest-growing and
most widely used class of synthetic pesticides—as a key
contributing factor to bee
declines.

Marla Spivak: Why bees are
disappearing
Honeybees
have thrived for 50 million years, each colony 40 to 50,000
individuals coordinated in amazing harmony. So why, seven years ago,
did colonies start dying en masse? Marla Spivak reveals four reasons
which are interacting with tragic consequences. This is not simply a
problem because bees pollinate a third of the world's crops. Could
this incredible species be holding up a mirror for us?
If nothing else , our job is to chronicle the extinction event we are witnessing.
