The number of wild animals living on Earth is set to fall by two-thirds by 2020, according to a new report, part of a mass extinction that is destroying the natural world upon which humanity depends.

The analysis, the most comprehensive to date, indicates that animal populations plummeted by 58% between 1970 and 2012, with losses on track to reach 67% by 2020. Researchers from WWF and the Zoological Society of London compiled the report from scientific data and found that the destruction of wild habitats, hunting and pollution were to blame.

The creatures being lost range from mountains to forests to rivers and the seas and include well-known endangered species such as elephants and gorillas and lesser known creatures such as vultures and salamanders.

The collapse of wildlife is, with climate change, the most striking sign of the Anthropocene, a proposed new geological era in which humans dominate the planet. “We are no longer a small world on a big planet. We are now a big world on a small planet, where we have reached a saturation point,” said Prof Johan Rockström, executive director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre, in a foreword for the report.

Marco Lambertini, director general of WWF, said: “The richness and diversity of life on Earth is fundamental to the complex life systems that underpin it. Life supports life itself and we are part of the same equation. Lose biodiversity and the natural world and the life support systems, as we know them today, will collapse.”

He said humanity was completely dependent on nature for clean air and water, food and materials, as well as inspiration and happiness.

The report analysed the changing abundance of more than 14,000 monitored populations of the 3,700 vertebrate species for which good data is available. This produced a measure akin to a stock market index that indicates the state of the world’s 64,000 animal species and is used by scientists to measure the progress of conservation efforts.

The biggest cause of tumbling animal numbers is the destruction of wild areas for farming and logging: the majority of the Earth’s land area has now been impacted by humans, with just 15% protected for nature. Poaching and exploitation for food is another major factor, due to unsustainable fishing and hunting: more than 300 mammal species are being eaten into extinction, according to recent research.

Pollution is also a significant problem with, for example, killer whales and dolphins in European seas being seriously harmed by long-lived industrial pollutants. Vultures in south-east Asia have been decimated over the last 20 years, dying after eating the carcasses of cattle dosed with an anti-inflammatory drug. Amphibians have suffered one of the greatest declines of all animals due to a fungal disease thought to be spread around the world by the trade in frogs and newts.

Rivers and lakes are the hardest hit habitats, with animals populations down by 81% since 1970, due to excessive water extraction, pollution and dams. All the pressures are magnified by global warming, which shifts the ranges in which animals are able to live, said WWF’s director of science, Mike Barrett.

Some researchers have reservations about the report’s approach, which summarises many different studies into a headline number. “It is broadly right, but the whole is less than the sum of the parts,” said Prof Stuart Pimm, at Duke University in the US, adding that looking at particular groups, such as birds, is more precise.

The report warns that losses of wildlife will impact on people and could even provoke conflicts: “Increased human pressure threatens the natural resources that humanity depends upon, increasing the risk of water and food insecurity and competition over natural resources.”

However, some species are starting to recover, suggesting swift action could tackle the crisis. Tiger numbers are thought to be increasing and the giant panda has recently been removed from the list of endangered species.

In Europe, protection of the habitat of the Eurasian lynx and controls on hunting have seen its population rise fivefold since the 1960s. A recent global wildlife summit also introduced new protection for pangolins, the world’s most trafficked mammals, and rosewoods, the most trafficked wild product of all.

But stemming the overall losses of animals and habitats requires systemic change in how society consumes resources, said Barrett. People can choose to eat less meat, which is often fed on grain grown on deforested land, and businesses should ensure their supply chains, such as for timber, are sustainable, he said.

You’d like to think that was a no-brainer in that if a business is consuming the raw materials for its products in a way that is not sustainable, then inevitably it will eventually put itself out of business,” Barrett said. Politicians must also ensure all their policies - not just environmental ones - are sustainable, he added.


The report is certainly a pretty shocking snapshot of where we are,” said Barrett. “My hope though is that we don’t throw our hands up in despair - there is no time for despair, we have to crack on and act. I do remain convinced we can find our sustainable course through the Anthropocene, but the will has to be there to do it.”

The results of satellite sounding with the help of the European orbital interferometer IASI / MetOP-A and the data-processing algorithm developed by NOAA are analyzed.

Satellite measurements for the temperate and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere give an increase in the rate of methane concentration from 4-9 ppbv / year (parts per billion by volume) in 2010-2013 up to 12-17 ppbv / year in 2015-2016.


Global estimates based on near-surface measurements of NOAA at coastal stations show an increase from ~5 ppbv / year in 2007-2013 up to 9-12 ppbv / year in the last two years.

Satellite data allow analyzing the methane concentration both over land and over the Arctic seas in the absence of near-surface temperature inversions.

The results of remote measurements are compared with direct airborne measurements in Alaska during the summer-autumn period during the CARVE (Carbon in Arctic Reservoirs Vulnerability Experiment) experiment.

The maximum anomalies of methane (in comparison with the area between Scandinavia and Iceland) were observed in November-December over the sea surface along the coasts of Norway, Novaya Zemlya, Svalbard and other regions of the Arctic.

In the summer, anomalies over the ocean were insignificant.

Over the years, anomalies grew: the maximum speed was recorded for the area to the west of Novaya Zemlya (9.4 ± 3.7) ppb / year.

Above Alaska, the anomaly of methane concentration in summer, when microbiological sources are active, grew at a rate (2.6 ± 1.0) ppb / year.

The location of the maxima of the anomaly around Spitsbergen corresponds to the observed methane emissions from the seabed and the predicted regions of dissociation of methanohydrates.


The increase in the rate of methane increase during the last two years does not necessarily indicate a long-term trend: 2015-2016 is characterized as the period of one of the most powerful effects of El Niño.

Над Аляской аномалия концентрации метана в летнее время, когда активны микробиологические источники, росла со скоростью (2,6±1,0) ppb/год. Местоположение максимумов аномалии вокруг Шпицбергена соответствует наблюдавшимся выходам метана с морского дна и предсказанным районам диссоциации метаногидратов. Отмеченное в данной работе увеличение скорости возрастания метана в течение последних двух лет не обязательно говорит о долгосрочной тенденции: 2015–2016 гг. характеризуются как период одного из наиболее сильных эффектов Эль-Ниньо.

Central Otago flooding: More heavy rain

Heavy rain is continuing to cause problems in Central Otago, with homes in Clyde surrounded by floodwaters last night and more rain expected later today.

The Fire Service was called out to five homes between 8pm and 9.30pm after lightning storms brought heavy rain.

None of the homes needed to be evacuated.

Further south, Roxburgh residents still dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding on Sunday are bracing for more heavy rain today.

The town flooded when 40 millimetres of rain fell in two hours, with the deluge knocking out power and water to the town's 600 residents, covering roads and gardens with silt and damaging sewers.

Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said the police were working closely with the district council to prepare for more heavy rain expected later today.

He said Roxburgh would have a greater police presence for the next few days.

Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan said the diggers were out again this morning, but the forecast for further heavy rain was a worry, as the culvert designed to deal with the deluge was still full of rubble.

"There is some concern there, we're going to watch nervously today with that heavy rain and see if it copes."

He said water services should be restored tomorrow, as both power and piping at the reservoir needed to be repaired, before it could be refilled and the line is tested.

Mr Cadogan said there were a number of water tankers around the town, and about one portaloo for every 26 people.

Roxburgh woman Becky Slade told Morning Report the clean-up at their property - which was 30m away from the creek - was a huge operation.

She said they had to clear out "thick, horrible, gloopy" silt, as well as rocks and debris.





Ms Slade said the power and phone was back on in her house, but the water was out.

The creek was "roaring" during Sunday's deluge, she said.

"I've never seen rain like it, the thunder and lightning stayed on us for three hours."

Strange booming sounds are coming out of the sky in locations around the world – and experts are baffled as to what causes them.
Last week, residents in Alabama heard a strange ‘boom’ from the sky, with police notified about a ‘loud boom’ on Monday this week.
Police said the sound – described as the ‘Bama boom’ – shook houses near Lochbuie.
But similar sounds have been heard around the world, from Colorado to Yorkshire, with 64 reported this year, the Daily Mail reports – and other ‘booms’ were heard near Denver this month.
So far it’s not clear what is causing the noises.
Experts have suggested a wide range of explantions from sonic booms to meteorites to controlled detonations of military weapons.
But the ‘Bama boom’ seems to defy explanation.
Birmingham National Weather Service tweeted: ‘Loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake.’
Bill Cooke, head of NASA’s Meteroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, said, ‘No one can figure out the cause.’
I’m kind of skeptical it could be a (meteor) because there were no reports of a fireball. There are reports of vapour trails.’

Yes this is huge… But not the end: Another low pressure area could undergo bombogenesis next week while sweeping across the same area.

High winds culminated at 92 mph at Atka Island and Adak Island as the storm engulfed the Bering Sea late Saturday into early Sunday. As shown in the picture above, the National Weather Service expected waves up to 50 and peak wind gusts up to 120 mph in different areas.
