In the Cold War this was called BRINKMANSHIP

"All US/NATO aircraft have turned around and departed the area."

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday it had scrambled eight fighter jets after it detected three US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers over the Black Sea.

In just the latest incident involving US bombers flying close to Russian airspace, a slew of Russian fighters were sent to meet three B-52 strategic bombers over the Black Sea on Friday.

"In order to prevent the US Air Force planes from violating Russian airspace, 4 Su-27 fighters and 4 Su-30 fighters from the air defense forces of the Southern Military District were raised over the Black and Azov Seas," the National Defense Management Center of the Russian Federation said.

The agency did not say if the bombers actually violated Russian airspace.

On August 28, a similar incident occurred as two Su-27 (NATO reporting name "Flanker") fighters were dispatched to deter several B-52 bombers over the Black Sea. The following day, a similar incident happened over the Baltic Sea, again involving B-52 bombers, which are slow, long-range aircraft capable of dropping huge amounts of munitions over targets and can carry several nuclear bombs.

The August 28 intercept was part of an unprecedented show of force by the United States, which dispatched six B-52 bombers to fly over all 30 NATO partner nations in a single day.

The Friday intercept also comes as the US Army begins exercises in Estonia that will feature live-fire rocket artillery drills less than 70 miles from the Russian border.

BREAKING NEWS: U.S.

SENDS FOUR NUCLEAR-

CAPABLE B-52'S TOWARD

CRIMEA -- RUSSIA

LAUNCHES STRATEGIC

BOMBERS

Hal Turner,

There is dangerous news developing in Europe. The United States sent three nuclear-capable B-52 stratofortress bombers toward Crimea, which came to within 20 miles of the border, and began circling near the shore of the Azov Sea. In response, Russia scrambled nuclear-capable Strategic Bombers.

This is a developing story . . . check back for updates.

UPDATE 10:54 AM EDT --

The B-52's entered Ukraine from Poland as shown on the radar tracking map below:

UPDATE 10:57 AM EDT -- FOUR ! ! ! !

We can now confirm the United States sent FOUR B-52's. Not three . . . . FOUR!

They can be seen circling near the shore of the Azov Sea, which is the Russia Border.

This operation including Nuclear-capable B-52 bombers would need very senior approval if not presidential approval.

American bombers have never even entered Ukrainian air space before today let alone coming close to Crimea. Trump poking the Russian bear before the election?

UPDATE 11:03 AM EDT --

The B-52's actually doing Loops within 25km of the Crimea Border. This is totally unprecedented; even at the height of the Cold War between the US and former Soviet Union, no one did things like this. It is far too dangerous.

The missiles carried by B-52's can be air launched and strike Russia with actual nukes within just a few minutes.

The long-range missiles of Russia can hit those B-52's within fewer minutes.

The mere presence of our B-52's, in such close proximity to Russia, can legitimately be viewed by Russia as a "clear and present danger."

Whoever decided to launch this mission is playing a dangerous and foolish game.

UPDATE 11:10 AM EDT --

Russia is launching additional Strategic Bombers! ! ! !

UPDATE 11:19 AM EDT --

British surveillance aircraft operating over the Black Sea near Crimea today at the same time American B-52 bombers approached the disputed territory

UPDATE 12:08 PM EDT --

All US/NATO aircraft have turned around and departed the area.
