US tightens embassy security in Lebanon and Turkey

United States officials tightened security at diplomatic missions in Lebanon and Turkey yesterday, ordering personnel out of Lebanon and offering to evacuate those in Adana in south-eastern Turkey, amid security threats against Americans.

The US State Department also warned American citizens against travelling in Lebanon and south-eastern Turkey.

Officials did not offer any specifics about the possible threats. The move comes as the Obama administration and Congress debate military strikes on neighbouring Syria.

The US closed 19 embassies and consulates across Africa and the Middle East last month for more than a week following a terrorist threat. Hezbollah, an ally of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad that has sent fighters into Syria, is based in Lebanon.


The State Department also said that Hezbollah ‘maintains a strong presence in parts of the southern suburbs of Beirut,
