Another
3.6 quake this morning
Earthquakes
in the world on January 19, 2013 (M4.5 or more) – Moderate
earthquake in Christchurch
The quake with M 4,6 (GeoNet) hit the town this morning (UTC, 9:15 PM local time). USGS gives M 4,3 and a depth of 17 km for this quake. It was felt stongly in the whole town (basing on GeoNt felt reports) which was partly destroyed by a M 6,3 quake in February 2011. Today’s quake, which had its epicenter in the southern part of Christchurch, was the strongest aftershock for a couple of months. It was also felt in parts of New Zealands North Island. Even people report a strong shaking in many parts of he town, we do not expect any major damage in and around Christchurch.
Christchurch
warned to expect more aftershocks
Cantabrians
should expect a series of aftershocks to follow last night's
magnitude 4.6 quake.
20
January, 2013
The
quake was the largest aftershock to hit the region since July of last
year.
The
4.6 tremor (initally reported by Geonet as 4.7) struck at 9.15pm, and
was centred 15km west of Christchurch, at a depth of 10km.
The
shake was the strongest aftershock experienced in the region since a
4.8 quake on July 6, 2012.
GNS
Science duty seismologist Mark Chadwick told Newstalk ZB the tremor
was felt widely.
"I'd
expect to see some aftershocks from this one.
"Probably
in the magnitude 3 type range - they tend to last maybe a few more
days (in terms of) aftershocks," he told Newstalk ZB.
The
quake caused a flurry of online traffic that overloaded Geonet's
website, and many took to social media to comment.
A
Twitter user said, "Well that one got me out of my chair. I
think I'm out of practice."
Another
user outside of Christchurch tweeted, "That was a goodie Chch
felt that in Ashburton - very out of practice. Heart just calming
down."
There
were no reports of damage or injury.
