The
Mexico earthquake today erupted in the early afternoon, officials
tell news. The quake, however, posted a significant depth. Officials

Earthquake Today 2013 Erupts West of Salta

LOS
ANGELES (LALATE) – A strong but deep Argentina earthquake today
2013 has erupted west of Salta. The quake followed an earlier strong
temblor to strike Indonesia as well. No report of damage have yet to
be detailed following either quake.
Firstm
officials tell news that a 4.3 magnitude Argentina terremoto erupted
Sunday January 6, 2013. The temblor began shortly after 8:48 am local
time. The quake however had a substantial depth and was centered in a
sparsely populated region.
USGS
indicates to news that the quake was forty-six miles west of San
Antonio de los Cobres. The quake also began roughly one hundred miles
west of Salta and one hundred ten miles west of San Salvador de
Jujuy. The was also roughly five hundred miles south of La Paz,
Bolivia, officials tell news.
Earlier,
a 5.4 magnitude quake struck Indonesia today. The quake, similarly,
had a substantial depth. Officials report that it erupted at 8:32 am
local time and was centered twenty-one miles north west of Ternate.
The quake was also twenty-two miles west of Kota Ternate and
fifty-seven miles south of Tobelo. USGS also indicates to news that
the quake was one hundred sixty miles east of Bitung.
In
related news, aftershocks from Saturday’s strong Alaska earthquake
have continued to strike the region. Most of the aftershocks have
registered at least 3.5 in magnitude today.

Update 18:45 UTC : Close to Providencia. The area is a wilderness and farming area with almost no important city.
Update 18:47 UTC : The epicenter is following the USGS at a distance of 7 km from Palomares. A difference of 15 km in between EMSC and USGS, not uncommon in seismology.
The earthquake was felt in a radius of several hundreds km.
Alaska
earthquake yesterday and aftershocks today
Nothing special is happening. Just normal aftershocks in the 4 to 5 range. We have noticed that a tweet from yesterday’s tsunami was send at 10:14 UTC on Sunday. It came just before an aftershock of 4.5. Alaska tsunami center is sending tsunami messages for moderate quakes. Unless our system is in error (should be an exception then) it means that we have received a message in our stream. Sorry about that, but that is the disadvantage of automatic systems. Once again : nothing unusual is going on, which you will see when you click on the link. The message on Sunday comes from the Pacific Tsunami and Weather Center (PWTC) and not from the Alaska Tsunami center.

January 6, 2013 volcano activity
KVERT
reports continued lava effusion from the southern fissure at Plosky
Tolbachik (Kamchatka
Peninsula) today. Volcanic tremor accompanying the eruption
remains at slightly higher levels than during the previous week.
Earthquake
information for Long
Valley Caldera (CA)
is not updating(?), so no current information on the (probably)
on-going deep earthquake activity beneath Mammoth Mountain volcano
(CA).
Exhalations
have diminished in frequency again at Popocatepetl
volcano (Mexico).
Emissions of gas and some ash now occurr at an average rate of less
than two events per hour.
Great
volcanocam shots of two Guatemalan
volcanoes (Fuego and Santa
Maria)
in action today.
At
Fuego, blocks spall from the snout of an active lava flow to produce
rockfalls with accompanying dust clouds, while at
the Santiaguito Dome
Complex (Santa Maria), explosions generate ash clouds that mushroom
above the edifice.
Seismograms
from Santa Maria (STG6) show periods of increased volcanic tremor
which can be associated with the explosive activity, while seimograms
from Fuego (station FG3) are non-descript, showing only low-level
volcanic tremor.
Meanwhile,
nearby Pacaya volcano
(station PCG) remains on-the-perk with numerous small volcanic
earthquakes and periods of low-level volcanic tremor.
A
swarm of volcanic earthquakes is underway (until receat San
Miguel volcano (El
Salvador) (station VSM) today.
Seismicity
at San
Cristobal volcano (Nicaragua)
(station CRIN) continues a slow, steady diminuition, while volcanic
tremor at nearby Masaya
volcano (station
MASN) has notably risen during the past week.
Small
volcanic earthquakes and periods of low-level volcanic tremor
affect Nevado
Del Ruiz volcano
(Colombia) again today (station OLLZ).
Seismicity
at Tungurahua volcano
(Ecuador) (station RETU) is at the lowest level since eruptive
activity re-commenced at the volcano in late December 2012.
No
recent updates from EPN on the inflation state of the volcano.
Seismicity at Reventador volcano
has also declined in the past 24 hours (station CONE).
A
significant SO2-enriched plume still wafts from Copahue volcano
(Chile). This and periodic earthquake swarms suggest the
volcano has some unfinished business.
Strong
(wind enhanced?) tremor today at White Island volcano.
Tremor-like signals also occur on seismograms (see spikes in tremor
levels on spectrograms) recorded at the other New
Zealand volcanoes,
Tongariro and Ruapehu. There is some suggestion of wind shear
in the fume cloud hovering over White Island, and the simultaneity of
tremor spikes at all three volcanoes suggests a wind event, but look
at the flags in the Ruapehu photo. Fume hovering over Tongariro
also does not seem to be disturbed by significant wind. Oh
well, no news is good news from Geonet.
