Volcano
lava flows worry
Italian island
Italian island
14
January, 2012
Spectacular
lava flows and smoke from an active volcano on the Italian island of
Stromboli on Monday sparked fear among inhabitants but geophysicists
said the situation was under control.
Stromboli
is part of the seven-island Eolian Archipelago just off Sicily in
southern Italy.
The
volcano is active but on Monday there was a particularly powerful
eruption and sustained lava flows following four days of heightened
activity.
Stromboli
mayor Marco Giorgianni told the island's 500 inhabitants that they
were not at risk and experts from Italy's civil protection agency are
due on the island for further controls shortly.
"We
are afraid," one resident, Pier Paolo Cincotta, was quoted by
the ANSA news agency as saying.
"No-one
has really explained to us what the situation is and what we should
do," he said.
Italy's
National Geophysics Institute is monitoring the situation.
Mt Tongariro still letting off
steam
Mt
Tongariro has continued to emit steam and gas but beneath the
mountain, things have been quiet so far this year.
15
Janaury, 2012
The
Te Maari craters, the site of eruptions in August and November last
year, continue to be active with continuous emissions of steam and
volcanic gas, GNS Science said.
The
gas was coming from a large fumarole and crack in a cliff just east
of the Upper Te Maari crater.
The
main Upper Te Maari crater is also discharging gas but at a lesser
rate.
"Gas
and steam emissions from the volcano will continue to be a feature of
the mountain for several years to come," GNS head vulcanologist
Gill Jolly said.
GNS
Science vulcanologists are planning to take new gas measurements to
compare with those made at the end of December.
Aerial
observations at the end of last year showed a large amount of
material had filled in the Upper Te Maari crater in the November 21
eruption but the main shape of the crater had not changed.
Meanwhile
seismic activity had remained relatively low, with no earthquakes yet
recorded beneath the mountain this year.
GNS
said Tongariro continued to be in a heightened state of unrest and
eruptions could occur with little or no warning.
Volcano
activity of January
15, 2013
Volcanic
tremor has become very “loud” overnight at White
Island volcano
(New Zealand), suggesting either an eruption in-progress (it is still
dark there at this time), or one in the offing. The tremor does
not appear to be weather (wind) related.
Volcanic
tremor remains slightly elevated when compared with last week’s
levels at Plosky
Tolbachik (Kamchatka
Peninsula). KVERT reports no significant changes in eruptive
activity at the volcano.
A
series of pulsating signals occurred on seismograms at Mount
Spurr volcano
(AK) earlier today (station CKT). What they represent is
unclear. They appear most similar to volcanic (long-period)
earthquakes, but could have been generated by any type of fluid
movement including wind or water. Debris flows have been not
uncommon at Mount Spurr since the onset of thermal unrest at the
volcano in 2004 and regional seismicity has been elevated near the
volcano for several months.
Exhalations
of gas and some ash now occur at an average rate of about two per
hour at Popocatepetl volcano
(Mexico). Small explosions (“green” event on record)
continue at Colima volcano
following last week’s unusually large outburst there.
Activity
(both internal and external) remains much reduced at Guatemalan
volcanoes Fuego (station
FG3),Santa
Maria (station
STG6), and Pacaya (station
PCG). Most of the “noise” on station STG6 is due to
monitoring equipment malfunction.
I
was finally able to access seismograms for the Nicaraguan volcanoes
(looks like there were some technical difficulties with the data).
All the volcanoes, San
Cristobal (station
CRIN), Masaya (station
MASN) andConcepcion (CONN),
show no appreciable change in their respective behaviors (varying
amounts of volcanic earthquakes and tremor) over the past 24 hours.
Very
small, but numerous, earthquakes rattle Colombian
volcanoes Machin (station
CIMA), Galeras (station
ANGV) and Cumbal (station
MEVZ) today. The amplification of Cumbal seismograms is
extremely reduced, making observation of such low magnitude events
difficult. An episode of larger magnitude earthquakes struckNevado
Del Ruiz volcano
(station OLLZ) late yesterday.
Seismicity
remains high at Reventador volcano
(Ecuador) (station CONE), and another brief episode of volcanic
earthquakes has occurred at nearby Cotopaxi volcano
(station CO1V). Tungurahua volcano
has returned to relative tranquility.
Seismicity
has declined to under 1000 events/day at Copahue.
The volcano is obscured by clouds today.
Small
local earthquakes remain visible on seismograms at Tongariro volcano
(New Zealand) and is accompanied by low level volcanic tremor at
nearby Ruapehu volcano.
GNS reports that no earthquakes have been located beneath Tongariro
so far this year, but strong degassing continues at the volcano.
A diffuse SO2
cloud hovers
over the Ecuadorian Andes in recent satellite imagery.
Reventador volcano is the likely culprit (given the high rate of
seismicity at the volcano). SO2 is enhanced along a weather
front over Italy and may be in-part (there is likely SO2 released by
human activity mixed-in!) from nearby Etna volcano which has shown
increased activity this past week. Diffuse SO2 is also visible
in the atmosphere around Manam (New Guinea) and Sakurajima (Japan)
volcanoes, both of which have experienced notable eruptions in the
past week.

Earthquake
in Uganda ?
Based
on an increasing number of visitors joining us from Uganda, we
believe that an earthquake was felt. When you are one of the people
who experienced this earthquake, please fill in the form behind “I
Felt A (not Listed) Earthquake”. Thank you.
Update
19:31 UTC : Data (source unknown) are speaking of a loud tremor of
M3.9 heard in Kampala, Uganda
Update
19:42 UTC : Still no official reports from the international
agencies. A loud thunderous noise but few people report a serious
shaking. On local twitter accounts people are referring to data of
M3.1 – M3.9, nothing serious by seismological standards.
Very
strong earthquake in the middle of nowhere
Not
honest to call this location like that but right in the middle
between Antarctica and New Zealand is quite some distance. No danger
for a tsunami of course.
Preliminary
data shows a Magnitude of 6.1 but this can still change upwards or
downwards.
Moderate
earthquake causes a lot of damage in Xinjiang, China
A
seemingly harmless M4.1 @ 9 km earthquake in Zhaosu, Xinjiang China
has damaged 43 houses and 53 stables. The damage is still being
assessed but at the moment it was calculated at 57 million Yuan. 158
people have been affected by the damage caused by this earthquake.
That’s
a lot of damage for such a moderate earthquake.
The
satellite image below is showing farming fields very close to the
epicenter. Soft soil may be the reason for the damage. These brick
and adobe houses have almost no resistance against earthquakes.
This
is another example of China being vulnerable for damage, even at very
moderate Magnitudes.
Important
Update 15:24 UTC : After further assessments the damage becomes far
bigger than originally expected. 2 houses have been reported as
collapsed. 174 houses (up from 43) have been damaged to various
degrees.
A
total of 669 people have been affected b this earthquake.
