A
powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka region may
trigger tsunami waves within a 300km radius, the US Pacific tsunami
warning center said.
According
to the US Geological Survey, the quake hit at
a 11.7km depth in the Pacific some 200km from Nikolskoe, a village
located on the Bering Island off the coast of the Kamchatka
Peninsula.
Three
other less powerful quakes were registered in the same region by the
USGS in the past 24 hours.
The
Kamchatka unit of the Russian emergencies ministry said it expected
the tsunami wave to be no bigger than 0.5 meters. It told Interfax
that Nikolskoe residents reported feeling tremors as did some people
living in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the provincial capital.
The
forecasted wave, however, failed to materialize, local authorities
reported two hours later after revoking the tsunami alert. The quake
itself did no more damage in Kamchatka than rattling some items off
shelves, according to TASS.
The
quake comes shortly after a powerful spewing of ash from the
Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka. The ash plume rose to a height of
6 kilometers above sea level, prompting an advisory for planes flying
in the region, local media reported.
Tropical
Storm Noul continues on its very slow trek west over the Yap state
today bringing breezy conditions and heavy rainfall to the small
islands of about 10,000 people.
Yap
and more specifically Ulithi took the brunt of Typhoon Maysak just
over a month ago leaving most of the islands devastated. Thus even
though this is only at a tropical storm intensity it is still a very
serious storm for the residents who are continuing with recovery
efforts here.

this time the NWS has issued Typhoon Warnings for Yap island as they
expect the storm to intensify in to a Typhoon before moving away by
Wednesday in to Thursday. On Yap the NWS has stated the following..

LISTEN FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION FROM YOUR LOCAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICE. DO NOT ATTEMPT INTER-ISLAND TRAVEL FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS.Noting the last line where no inter island travel is recommended. This is
key as there are many tourist in YAP this week during Japans Golden
Week Holidays.
Winds up to 120kph with surf up to 15ft could be seen on the northern
Extent of Yap. Furthermore heavy rainfall around 15 inches or 380mm
is expected according to the Guam NWS.

The
incredible amount of rainfall is a direct result of the storms slow
movement, meaning a constant amount of rainfall over coming
days.
Philippines
After
it tracks west away from YAP Noul is anticipated to start a North
West turn clipping the NE coast of Luzon or making a landfall
somewhere along the coast over the weekend. In either situation
residents here should prepare for the threat of high winds, heavy
rainfall and dangerous surf by Saturday in to Sunday.

Southern
Japan
Those
in Okinawa and the southern Japanese islands actually should be
watching this storm too. There is the threat that in the long range
it could blow by bringing typhoon strength winds to the island. This
is still long range and a little biy of waver to the east or west
could mean the difference between typhoon strength damaging winds or
a slight breeze. Especially the farther east the storm goes the
lighter the winds will be.

29, 2015, Sullivan County, Tennessee. BIG PROBLEMS AT BOONE DAM -- 7
REACTORS DOWNSTREAM -- "...Boone Dam is 160 feet high, and
nearly 1,700 feet wide — most of which is the earthen berm.
"The
seepage is being blamed on karst, a geological characteristic common
throughout Northeast Tennessee. Karst occurs with dissolution of
bedrock, such as limestone. The more rock lost, the more room for
more water to flow through — speeding the further dissolution of
rock.
"Seepage
through an earthen section of a dam in not at all unusual, Johnson
said, but when sediment appears in that seepage, it can indicate
ongoing erosion.
"A
sinkhole occurred in a non-public parking area on the downstream side
of Boone Dam in October. It was filled. Shortly afterward,
sediment-filled seepage was discovered on the riverbank downstream of
the dam.
There
has been a rise in the number of volcanic earthquakes recorded in
Hakone, Japan. The nearby Hakone volcano began belching steaming gas
and meteorologists say there is a possible risk of an eruption.
There
were two minor quakes registering 2.4 and 2.0 recorded at the Hakone
volcano, which is located in the Kanagawa Province and is 80
kilometers southwest of the capital Tokyo. Meanwhile, there were a
total of 98 volcanic earthquakes recorded at the popular hot springs
resort of Hakone on Tuesday up until 15:00 local time. During the
whole of Monday, 34 were logged.
Japan’s
meteorological agency has issued a warning to limit access to the
resort.
"Activity
at Hakone... is in a state of uncertainty," the agency said in
an advisory, which was reported by AFP. "There is a possibility
that a minor eruption may suddenly occur," it said. "Please
do not enter dangerous zones."
Despite
the warning, the agency still believes the risk of the Hakone volcano
erupting is minimal. It is maintaining an alert level at 1 on a scale
of 5. Level 1 means “normal."
“Shallow
hot-water activity in parts of the Owakudani Valley has become
unstable,” the agency said in an advisory note, which was cited by
the Kyodo news agency. “There is a possibility that a minor
ejection [of hot steam] may suddenly occur,” it said. “Please do
not enter danger zones.”
Local
hiking trails are also off-limits as there has been a recent surge in
volcanic activity. On May 1, just two volcanic earthquakes were
recorded; however this figure has been increasing. There were 36
logged on Sunday and 34 on Monday.
The figure spiked on Tuesday.
The
warning comes during the middle of Japan’s “Golden Week” spring
holidays and is likely to affect tourism in the area. Around 20
million people visit Hakone, which is home to some of the country’s
most famous hot springs.

In
February 2013, 1,400 small earthquakes were recorded around the
Hakone Volcano, but there was no eruption. The last one took place
around 3,000 years ago.
In
November, Japan’s largest active volcano, Mount Aso, started
spewing ash and stones, which caused local airlines to cancel
flights.
However,
the eruption of Mount Ontake on September 27 eventually killed 57
people, which was Japan’s worst volcanic disaster in almost 90
years. The search for survivors was eventually called off on October
16. I read somewhere that this was being blamed on storms in New Zealand. I can't think of anything big enough to create this
Big
waves lashing the Pacific coast from Mexico to Chile left three
people dead and one missing, forcing hundreds to evacuate from the
coastline. The rough weather is expected to last four more days.
