Tropical Storm Irma Could Form off Southeast Coast; Tropical Storm Watches Issued for Carolina Coast

• An area of low pressure is becoming better organized off the Southeast coast.

• Regardless of development, heavy rain, gusty winds and minor coastal flooding are expected from the Southeast coast to the mid-Atlantic.

An area of low pressure off the Southeast coast has become better organized, and it could become the next Atlantic tropical cyclone early this week.

Tropical storm watches have been issued for parts of the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts from South Santee River, South Carolina, to Duck, North Carolina.

Current Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings

Tropical-storm-force winds (39 mph or greater) are possible within the watch area Monday night through Tuesday.

This weather system, for now, has been dubbed Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten – a naming convention used to identify features that have a chance to develop into a tropical depression or storm, but could bring tropical-storm-like impacts to the coast soon – by the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The NHC has given Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten a high chance of formation into a tropical depression or storm within the next day or so before it merges with a front. The next named storm in the Atlantic would be "Irma."

The highest cloud tops, corresponding to the most vigorous convection, are shown in the brightest red colors. Clustering, deep convection around the center is a sign of a healthy tropical cyclone.

The latest forecast guidance suggests the area of low pressure will track northeastward away from Florida across the North Carolina coast. A southward dip in the jet stream across the eastern United States would be responsible for sending this system northeastward.

This area of low pressure is expected to strengthen as it moves northeastward.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten is expected to drift toward the South and North Carolina coasts through Tuesday.

Contour on the map is for rainfall expected through Tuesday evening.

Depending on how closely the low tracks to the Southeast coast early this week, areas as far north as southeastern Virginia could see bands of heavy rain.

Additionally, the low-pressure system in tandem with strong high pressure over the Northeast will create an onshore wind flow. That would result in gusty northeast winds, high surf, rip currents and possible coastal flooding from Georgia to the mid-Atlantic.

Here is a breakdown of where impacts may be experienced early this week:

• Monday: Rain and thunderstorms will spread into the Carolinas and perhaps eastern Virginia.
• Tuesday: Rain and gusty winds are expected along the mid-Atlantic coast.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected along the Southeast coast from South Carolina to southeast Virginia, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches, especially at the immediate coast. Rough surf, rip currents and coastal flooding are anticipated Monday and Tuesday along the coast from Georgia to the mid-Atlantic.

This system, previously known as Invest 92L, enhanced rainfall in the Florida Peninsula. Localized flooding from the tropical moisture surge associated with this system occurred as 92L criss-crossed the peninsula.

Australia's west coast has been forced to bunker down as heavy rain, 110km/h winds and massive ocean swells lash the south-west corner of the country while Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane continue to bathe in sunshine.

About 60,000 homes in Perth and the south-west region are without power and the SES had received 70 calls for assistance this morning as fallen trees and wind caused damage across the city.

The strongest cold front of the year arrived at the southern half of Western Australia about midnight, bringing with it severe wind gusts and torrential rain. 

Cape Leeuwin, south of Perth was the first to record strong wind gusts up to 94km/h at 1:50am, followed by 109 km/h at Rottnest Island, at 5:30am and seaside suburbs of Perth experiencing 109 km/h winds at 7am.

Amid concerns for potential flash flooding, heavy rain was also recorded overnight with towns south of Perth, Witchcliffe and Bridgetown receiving 56mm and 52mm respectively.

The monster storm was preceded with abnormally high tide earlier this week, with surfers riding waves of up to seven metres high.

The The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a warning for the region and urged people to steer clear of any water bodies and take shelter within homes - away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.

Saturday sports matches were put on notice and people were advised to contact their sports clubs for advice on whether games would go head.

'Post-frontal conditions will come through this afternoon, which include thunderstorms, chance of small hail and severe gusts continuing,' Bureau of Meterology forecaster Meaghan Johnston said.

The extreme Western Australia weather pattern shows no sign of letting up with a second storm expected to blast the coast again on Tuesday, with waves again expected to reach in excess of six meters.

'We experience winds like this about five times a year in Perth,' Ms Johnston said.

'We do have another system expected on the Tuesday, from what we can see it is quite similar.'

Surfers are taking advantage of the swell the storm has brought along the coast, ignoring warnings from authorities about the dangerous conditions.

Surf Life Saving WA warned residents of the 'dangerous conditions on our coast this weekend' in a tweet on Friday.

Perth maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 18 and 20 degrees for the next seven days.

Accumulated rainfall way beyond 'normal'

Wednesday saw 50 times the average rain the country gets every March over the past decade.

The UAE on Wednesday saw one of the highest rainfalls it has had in recent years, with a day’s rain in Al Shuwaib equivalent to more than 50 times the average rain the country gets every March over the past decade.

Hours of heavy thunderstorms and torrential rains on Monday, Tuesday, and especially Wednesday, that saw many parts of the country reeling in floodwaters.
One place in particular, drew the most amount of rainfall: Al Shuwaib, a town in Abu Dhabi to the border of Oman, north of Al Ain.

“On Wednesday, the total amount of rainfall was recorded 287.6 mm at Al Shuwaib, which is highest amount of rainfall ever recorded in 24 hours and is way above normal,” a forecaster from the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) told Gulf News.

If we calculate, the rain collected in Al Shuwaib on Wednesday is 51 times more than the average amount of rainfall the country got in March from 2003 to 2014, figures from NCMS’ Climate Year Report.

When it rains, it pours, in the case of Abu Dhabi Airport, which on Wednesday saw roofs collapse, small planes scatter, and debris smash into terminal doors in a heavy storm .

The severe weather conditions forced the airport to suspend all flights and cancel the UAE Air Expo 2016

Airport staff and passengers looked on as wind and rain battered the airport, causing further destruction.

In one video, a large piece of debris smashed into a set of glass doors, causing panic among bystanders.

A post on a frequent flyer site called Boarding Area criticized the UAE's infrastructure, saying the Emirates are unequipped for severe weather. "Qatar and the UAE seem to have almost unlimited funds for completely unnecessary construction, but can't even get basic things right, like rain-proof buildings. Embarrassing...," it read.

Though the worst appears to be over, the bad weather is predicted to continue over the next few days, though flights schedules are expected to resume to normal.

Local Civil Defence spokesperson Roger Ball told Morning Report there was about half of metre of rain hammering Nelson and Golden Bay.

He said it was a one-in-25-years flood at the Wairoa River, and the police were knocking on doors to warn residents, although the river level had gone down.

"We did have police having to go knock on a few doors last night just to start talking to a few residents there. We had a few nervous moments."

Mr Ball said he expected more calls from people about suffice flooding as they woke up.

Fire crews were called in to deal with two flooded homes in central Nelson in the early hours of this morning.

Further rain is expected and emergency services and council contractors are monitoring the Maitai River in Nelson.

Overnight, the Wairoa River caused extensive surface flooding around the Brightwater area, and in Golden Bay the Anatoki River has also caused surface flooding.

Maitai Road has been closed at Ralphine Way due to flooding risk from the Maitai River, and water is across SH6 at Brightwater Bridge.

In the Golden Bay area, flooding affected Ferntown, Waitapu Splash, Upper Takaka and Lindsay's Bridge.

In Kaikoura, strong winds caused roofs to come off some sheds and properties last night.

There were also callouts of flooding in Alexandra.
